Which countries have no crypto tax?

Few crypto tax free countries are fully free. The UAE has no personal income tax, while others exempt only private gains, long holdings or non-traders.

There is no simple list of crypto tax free countries, because "no crypto tax" nearly always comes with conditions. A handful of places charge no tax on an individual's personal crypto gains, and several more exempt gains only for private investors or long holders. Income such as mining, staking or crypto wages is often still taxed, as of October 2026.

Which country has no crypto tax?

The United Arab Emirates is the clearest case for individuals. PwC says there is currently no personal income tax there, at federal or emirate level. Individuals who run a business can owe 9% corporate tax once that business's turnover passes AED 1 million, but wages and personal investment income do not count toward that figure. The detail is in how crypto is taxed in the UAE.

A country with no tax of its own does not cancel tax owed elsewhere. People who move abroad may still have duties to the country they came from, which is a question for that country's rules.

Are there crypto tax free countries in Europe?

Several European countries exempt some gains, each with conditions.

  • Switzerland. The federal tax authority ESTV says private capital gains on crypto are generally tax-free, but crypto counts toward cantonal wealth tax, mining and staking rewards are income, and professional traders pay income tax.
  • Germany. Private sales are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year, Divly reports. Plans to end this were debated in 2026 but had not become law as of October 2026. The detail is in the Germany guide on this site.
  • Portugal. Gains on crypto held 365 days or more are exempt, while shorter holdings are taxed at 28%, ECO explains. The exemption does not apply in some cases involving counterparties outside the EU or EEA.
  • Georgia. Andersen says individuals' gains from selling or exchanging crypto are not treated as Georgian-source income, so they are taxed at 0%, while mining is taxed. See how crypto is taxed in Georgia.

Are there crypto tax free countries in Asia?

Several Asian places have no capital gains tax but do tax trading.

  • Singapore. IRAS taxes gains on payment tokens only when they are revenue in nature, judged using the badges of trade.
  • Hong Kong. Profits tax excludes profits from selling capital assets, and applies only to profits arising in or derived from Hong Kong. Trading as a business is taxed.
  • Malaysia. LHDN says capital gains tax is not currently imposed on capital-nature disposals of digital currency in Malaysia, but active trading profits are taxable.

Why are bitcoin tax free countries rarely fully tax free?

Because the tax usually turns on facts about you. Tax authorities ask whether you trade like a business, how long you held, whether the coins came from mining or work, and where you live for tax purposes. Hong Kong, for example, looks at intention and trading patterns, as its crypto tax guide explains. A wider comparison is in crypto tax around the world.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
