Taiwan crypto tax rules come from the existing Income Tax Act rather than a crypto-specific law. The Ministry of Finance (MOF) has said crypto is an asset, not a currency, so a profit on selling it is taxed as income from a property transaction. Where the gain is earned, inside Taiwan or overseas, changes how it is reached, as of October 2026.

How does Taiwan cryptocurrency tax work for individuals?

The MOF said in 2022, after the FTX collapse, that occasional sales of virtual assets inside Taiwan produce property transaction income. The gain is the sale price minus the original cost and related expenses, and it is added to the person's consolidated income. Losses can be claimed as a special deduction against property transaction income. The ministry advised investors to keep proof of what they paid.

In December 2024 Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun repeated that crypto is an asset rather than money, the Commercial Times reported. Consolidated income is taxed at progressive rates from 5% to 40% for the 2025 filing year, according to PwC. Companies include crypto gains in taxable income under profit-seeking enterprise income tax.

How are gains on overseas exchanges taxed?

Taiwan's individual income tax covers only income from within Taiwan. Gains made overseas fall under the income basic tax instead. PwC says this is a flat 20% charged on residents, who pay whichever is higher, the regular tax or the basic tax.

Foreign income is counted only when a household's overseas income reaches NT$1 million in a year, and the tax bites only on basic income above NT$7.5 million. The MOF kept that NT$7.5 million figure unchanged for 2026. Overseas losses can offset overseas property transaction income in the same year, but not beyond it, the MOF said in 2022.

Why is Taiwan crypto tax a common question on Reddit?

Because the line between domestic and overseas gains is hard to apply. In November 2024 the Taipei Times reported that gains on foreign exchanges were not clearly taxed and that large gains could escape notice below the overseas threshold. Officials pledged to review the rules. The MOF later said it would watch exchange tax registration and account-opening records, and that withdrawals over NT$500,000 are reported under anti-money laundering rules, CTEE reported. Good records help either way, as the guide to crypto cost basis explains.
