Coinbase vs Coinbase Wallet (Base app): what is the difference?
Coinbase is a custodial exchange that holds your keys, while Coinbase Wallet, briefly called the Base app, is a self-custody wallet where you hold them.
Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet share a brand but work in opposite ways. Coinbase is a crypto exchange that keeps your crypto in your account and manages the keys. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody app where you control the keys, and Coinbase cannot move your funds or recover your access.
What is the difference between Coinbase and Coinbase Wallet?
On the Coinbase exchange, you sign up with an email and password and verify your identity. Coinbase manages the private keys, and if you forget your password you can regain access through the company. It is a custodial setup.
In Coinbase Wallet, the keys live on your device. Coinbase says it never has access to your recovery phrase or other sign-in method and cannot move funds for you. Coinbase promotes the wallet as needing no identity check, and positions it as a place to reach onchain assets and markets that may not be listed on its exchange. Some features are limited by region. Our guide on exchange vs wallet explains the wider trade-off.
Is the Base app the same as Coinbase Wallet?
Yes. In July 2025 Coinbase relaunched Coinbase Wallet as the Base app, adding social feeds, creator coins and messaging. On September 10, 2026, Coinbase confirmed it was restoring the Coinbase Wallet name after CEO Brian Armstrong said the social push did not quite work. Balances were not affected, and users update the mobile app to see the change.
Base is still the name of Coinbase's Ethereum layer 2 network. As of October 2026, Coinbase Wallet supports Base, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche and others. Some Coinbase help pages may still mention the Base app or a Base account.
Does Coinbase Wallet have a recovery phrase?
It depends on how you set it up. Older and phrase-based wallets use a 12-word recovery phrase, and you can also back up to iCloud or Google Drive. Newer accounts (formerly called Smart Wallet) can sign in with an email code or a passkey instead, and only have a recovery phrase if one was set up.
Coinbase says that if your phrase is ever exposed, you should move your funds to a new wallet right away. If you lose every sign-in method, Coinbase cannot restore the wallet. See what is a seed phrase for how phrases work.
Is Coinbase Wallet a cold wallet?
No. A cold wallet keeps keys on an offline device, usually a hardware wallet. Coinbase Wallet runs on your phone or in your browser, which are connected to the internet, so it counts as a hot wallet. Our guide to hot wallet vs cold wallet covers the difference, and moving crypto to a cold wallet explains the steps if you want offline storage.
