Whether Trust Wallet is safe depends on the app's design, its record and how the user protects the recovery phrase. Trust Wallet is a legitimate self-custody wallet, so the user, not the company, holds the keys. This guide sets out its protections and incidents as of October 2026. For what the app does, see what Trust Wallet is.

Is Trust Wallet safe and legit?

Trust Wallet is a real company and product. Binance announced it was buying the wallet, founded by Viktor Radchenko, on July 31, 2018, Fortune reported, and said it would keep running as its own brand. Because it is self-custody, coins in it are not held by Binance the way exchange balances are.

"Legit" does not mean risk-free. Scammers copy the brand with fake apps and fake support accounts. Trust Wallet says it will never ask for private keys, recovery phrases or passwords.

Is Trust Wallet safe from hackers?

Trust Wallet's security overview, updated in January 2026, says private keys are encrypted with AES and stored on the device, and the passcode is hashed and kept in a tamper-resistant key store. A Security Scanner in the mobile app rates each transaction and warns about risky addresses and apps. The company lists audits by firms such as CertiK, Cure53, Halborn and Quantstamp.

The browser extension has been the weak spot twice.

  • 2022 to 2023. A flaw in random number generation meant wallets created in the extension between November 14 and 23, 2022 could be guessed. Trust Wallet patched it within a day of a bug bounty report, but two exploits later took about $170,000. It reimbursed victims through a claims process.
  • December 2025. An attacker used a leaked Chrome Web Store key to publish a malicious version 2.68. Trust Wallet linked the leak to a wider supply chain attack in November 2025. It says 2,520 addresses were drained and about $8.5 million is tied to attacker addresses, and it chose to reimburse affected users after checking claims.

Mobile app users were not affected by either incident.

Is Trust Wallet safe to store crypto?

Trust Wallet keeps keys on an internet-connected phone or computer, so it is a hot wallet. It supports connecting hardware wallets for cold storage, which keeps keys off the online device. The trade-off is explained in hot wallet vs cold wallet.

The risks that depend on the user are the same as for any self-custody app. Anyone with the 12-word phrase controls the funds, and blockchain transfers cannot be reversed. Trust Wallet suggests turning on App Lock and asking for authentication when signing. The tricks used to steal phrases are covered in common crypto scams, and a comparison point is is MetaMask safe.
