What is a passkey wallet in crypto?

A passkey wallet is a crypto wallet you unlock with a device passkey, such as Face ID or a fingerprint, instead of writing down a seed phrase.

A passkey wallet is a crypto wallet that you open and approve with a passkey instead of a 12 or 24-word seed phrase. You confirm actions with Face ID, a fingerprint or a device PIN. Behind the scenes, the passkey's cryptographic key does the authorizing.

What is a passkey in crypto?

The FIDO Alliance, the industry group behind the standard, defines a passkey as a passwordless credential made of a private and a public key. Each passkey is tied to one website or app, which makes it hard to phish. There are two kinds:

  • Synced passkeys are copied through a cloud service, such as Apple's iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, to your other devices on the same account.
  • Device-bound passkeys stay on one piece of hardware, such as a security key, and cannot be exported.

Exchanges use passkeys for login, as our guide on securing an exchange account explains. A passkey wallet uses one to control a self-custody wallet.

How does a passkey smart wallet work?

Passkeys sign with a curve called P-256, or secp256r1. Ordinary key-based Ethereum accounts are not set up to accept these signatures, so a passkey cannot directly sign a normal transaction. The usual fix is a smart contract wallet, whose code can be written to accept a passkey signature as approval.

Ethereum added native support in its Fusaka upgrade on December 3, 2025. EIP-7951 created a built-in checker for P-256 signatures, and ethereum.org says it opens the way to device-native signing and passkeys without a seed phrase. The proposal lists phone security chips, such as Apple's Secure Enclave, among hardware that uses the curve.

How does a passkey Coinbase wallet work?

Coinbase's self-custody wallet offers accounts that sign in with a passkey or an email code. As of October 2026, its help page says the passkey is stored by your device or cloud provider and unlocked with biometrics or a PIN. iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager and 1Password can sync it, and a YubiKey works as a hardware option.

Coinbase advises against Windows Hello and Chrome profile passkeys, which are tied to one device. A recovery phrase exists only if you set one up, and Coinbase says to use it only on keys.coinbase.com. It also warns against deleting passkeys you are unsure about. The wider app is covered in Coinbase vs Coinbase Wallet.

Is there a Solana passkey wallet?

Yes, though it works differently. Solana transactions use Ed25519 signatures, which passkeys do not produce. A June 2025 post on the Helius developer blog says Solana enabled onchain checks of P-256 signatures that month, but that this does not remove the need for an Ed25519 signature. Wallet builders therefore use the passkey to authorize a session, while a separate key, sometimes managed through MPC, signs the transaction.

On any chain, a passkey removes the paper backup but moves the risk. With a synced passkey, your wallet access depends on keeping control of the cloud account that stores it. Losing every device and that account can mean losing the wallet unless another sign-in method was set up.
