What is a whitelist in crypto?

A crypto whitelist is an approved list of people or addresses, used either to limit exchange withdrawals or to grant early access to a token or NFT sale.

A crypto whitelist is a list of approved participants or wallet addresses, where only those on the list can take a given action. The word is used in two quite different ways. On an exchange, it is a security feature that controls where your withdrawals can go. In a token or NFT launch, it is a guest list that decides who gets to buy first.

What is address whitelisting on an exchange?

Address whitelisting restricts crypto withdrawals to addresses you have saved and approved. If someone breaks into your account, they cannot simply send your coins to a new address of their own. Kraken notes that a saved address book also cuts the risk of sending funds to the wrong wallet by mistake.

Exchanges set it up differently. Coinbase calls its version an address book allowlist and requires your 2-step verification method to switch it on or off. A newly added address becomes usable after 48 hours, and turning the feature off also takes 48 hours, unless you do so within 8 hours of turning it on. Binance.US lets users star saved addresses and then flip a whitelist toggle, and as of October 2026 its help page says this works only on the website, not the mobile app. Our guide on how to secure a crypto exchange account puts this setting alongside other protections such as security keys.

What is a whitelist in a token sale?

In a token sale, a whitelist is the list of people allowed to take part. Kraken says projects and exchanges use these lists mainly to meet anti-money-laundering and KYC rules. Entry can be as simple as an email address or as involved as proof of identity, proof of address and a live selfie check.

The sale contract may store approved addresses and ignore deposits from anyone else, and it may cap how much each address can buy. Organizers also use whitelists to keep out bots and to block certain countries. Sales of this kind are covered in our guide to the ICO.

What is an allowlist for an NFT mint?

For NFTs, OpenSea defines an allowlist as a set of wallet addresses that can mint before a collection opens to the public. Creators choose who is added, often active community members or holders of an earlier collection. Listed buyers may get early access or a different price. On OpenSea, these presale stages are enforced onchain, so an unlisted wallet cannot mint in that stage.

Are crypto whitelists risky?

The exchange version adds friction for thieves and costs you a short wait. The sale version carries trade-offs. Kraken points out that joining a whitelist ties your personal details to a wallet address, which can make your onchain activity easier to track. Any identity documents you hand over could be misused if the organizer is careless or dishonest.

Fake projects also run sign-up pages that exist only to collect personal data or wallet access. A real whitelist never needs your seed phrase. Our guide to common crypto scams covers the warning signs.
