What is Phantom wallet and how does it work?

Phantom wallet is a self-custodial crypto app and browser extension, first built for Solana, that now also supports Ethereum, Bitcoin and other networks.

Phantom wallet is a self-custodial crypto wallet that started as a Solana wallet and now works across several blockchains. It comes as a phone app and a browser extension, and it lets you hold tokens, send and receive crypto, swap, and connect to apps. Because it is self-custodial, the safety of the funds depends heavily on how you protect your recovery phrase.

Which networks does Phantom wallet support besides Solana?

Phantom is best known as a Solana wallet, but as of October 2026 its help center lists seven supported networks: Solana, Ethereum, Polygon, Bitcoin, Base, HyperEVM and Robinhood Chain. You cannot add a custom network yourself, so a token on an unsupported chain needs a different wallet.

The list changes over time. Phantom ended support for the Sui network on September 24, 2026. Sui tokens did not disappear, since they still sit on the Sui blockchain, but they can no longer be viewed, sent or swapped inside Phantom. For the bigger picture of how Solana compares with other chains, see our separate guides.

How do you set up the Phantom wallet app or extension?

Phantom offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge, plus iOS and Android apps. The company says to download it only from phantom.com, since a copycat app or extension can steal whatever you put into it.

There are two ways to create a wallet. The classic route generates a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase that you write down and keep offline. It is the master key to the wallet, as explained in our guide on what a seed phrase is. The second route lets you sign in with a Google or Apple account and set a four-digit PIN to restore the wallet on a new device. Phantom still suggests exporting and saving the recovery phrase as a backup.

Is Phantom wallet safe to use?

Phantom has several built-in protections. Transaction previews simulate what a transaction will do before you approve it, and the wallet warns about suspicious websites, blocked programs and spam tokens. Phantom says its open-source blocklist covers more than 2,000 malicious domains and is updated daily.

Those tools reduce risk but cannot remove it. Because Phantom is self-custodial, anyone who gets your recovery phrase can take the funds, and there is no company that can reverse a signed transaction. Phantom says it will never message or email you or ask you to send funds, so any "support agent" who does is a scammer.

What are common Phantom wallet scams?

Phantom's help pages point to fake NFT mints, fake airdrops and giveaways as some of the most common traps. Unrequested NFTs that land in a wallet often carry links to malicious sites that ask you to connect and sign. Signing one of these can hand over control of your tokens, a method described in our guide to crypto phishing and wallet drainers. A simple habit helps: do not click links in tokens you did not expect, and read each signing request before approving it.
