Is Ledger safe?
Ledger devices keep keys in a secure chip, but a 2020 customer data leak and a 2023 attack on a Ledger code library both caused harm to users.
Whether Ledger is safe depends on which part of Ledger you mean. The hardware wallets keep keys offline inside a tamper-resistant secure element chip, and neither of Ledger's major incidents revealed customers' recovery phrases. But leaked customer data and a poisoned piece of Ledger software have both cost users, and its optional Ledger Recover service changed how some people view the company.
Is Ledger safe for crypto?
A Ledger device signs transactions inside its chip and shows the details on its own screen, so a hacked computer cannot simply copy the key. That protection has two limits. It does not help if the recovery phrase is typed into a fake app or website, and it does not help if the owner approves a harmful transaction. Ledger says it will never ask for the 24 words.
What happened in the Ledger data breach?
Ledger said on July 29, 2020, that an outsider had used an API key to reach part of its shop and marketing database on June 25, 2020. About 1 million email addresses were exposed, and 9,500 customers had their name, postal address and phone number exposed. Ledger said payment details, crypto funds and devices were not affected.
The fuller picture came in December 2020. Decrypt reported that the database had been posted on RaidForums, a site for hacked data, including over 270,000 physical addresses and phone numbers. Ledger warned that criminals could pose as the company to ask for seed phrases, and said it never contacts users by text or phone. Leaked home addresses also raise the risk of wrench attacks.
The second incident was different. On December 14, 2023, an attacker phished a former Ledger employee and published malicious versions of Ledger Connect Kit, a code library many crypto apps used to connect wallets. For under two hours, apps using it showed fake prompts that drained users who signed them, according to Ledger's report. The Block put stolen funds at over $500,000. Ledger said the attacker never reached its infrastructure or devices, and it pledged to remove blind signing as an option.
What is Ledger Recover?
Ledger Recover is an optional paid service, launched in May 2023, that splits an encrypted copy of the seed phrase into three fragments held by Coincover, Ledger and Escrowtech. Restoring it requires a government ID check. As of October 2026, Ledger lists it in the EU, the UK, Canada and the US. Ledger says the service is opt-in and needs consent on the device. Its launch still drew strong objections from users who believed keys could never leave a Ledger, as our guide on Ledger's open source code describes.
Is Ledger safe to buy on Amazon?
Ledger says to buy from Ledger.com, an authorized reseller or its official Amazon storefront, and to check the "Sold by" field because other sellers can share one listing. A genuine device never comes with a preset PIN or recovery phrase. Ledger also says to run the Genuine Check in its official app.
