How do you report crypto on TurboTax?

TurboTax crypto reporting works by importing exchange data or a 1099-DA, uploading a gain and loss file, or typing in sales for Form 8949.

To report crypto on TurboTax, you add your crypto sales in the investment income section, either by importing them from an exchange, uploading a tax form or report, or typing them in yourself. TurboTax then places each sale on Form 8949 and carries the totals to Schedule D. The steps below reflect TurboTax help pages for the 2025 tax year, updated through April 2026. What the forms themselves mean is explained in crypto tax forms.

How do you report crypto on TurboTax Online?

TurboTax's help article lists these steps:

  1. In the Federal section, go to Income, then Investments and Savings.
  2. Select Start next to stocks, crypto and other investments, and answer Yes to the investment income question.
  3. Pick your exchange to import from, or choose Enter a different way.
  4. To type sales in, choose Cryptocurrency, then Type it in myself.

When you connect an exchange, you sign in on that exchange's page and TurboTax says it can pull in thousands of transactions plus any tax forms. It then asks you to check the import against the exchange's 1099-DA or gain and loss report.

How do you enter a 1099-DA in TurboTax?

Form 1099-DA is the new broker form for crypto sales from January 1, 2025. TurboTax notes that for 2025 sales, brokers did not have to report cost basis. Some brokers, such as Robinhood, include the 1099-DA inside a consolidated 1099. TurboTax says to confirm the 1099-DA was picked up after uploading. If not, save just those pages as a new PDF and upload it through Add investments, Enter a different way, Upload.

If basis is missing, you supply it from your own records. See what is crypto cost basis.

Can you upload a crypto CSV to TurboTax?

TurboTax's April 2026 help article does not describe a direct CSV upload. It lists three routes instead:

  • Online: exchange import, or a PDF, JPG or PNG of a gain and loss report
  • Desktop: a TXF file through Import now on the brokerage documents screen
  • Both: manual entry

For Desktop, TurboTax suggests converting a CSV to TXF with a third-party tool first. Many crypto tax software products can also export reports in formats TurboTax accepts.

How do you report crypto on a tax return with Form 8949?

The IRS added digital asset boxes for 2025. Short-term sales use box G if a 1099-DA shows basis reported to the IRS, box H if it does not, and box I if you got no 1099-DA. Long-term sales use J, K and L the same way. The IRS says not to use the old boxes C or F for crypto.

The IRS allows totals to go straight to Schedule D only when the 1099-DA shows reported basis and nothing needs adjusting. Otherwise you can attach a statement listing each sale and enter the combined totals. Income such as staking rewards is entered separately from sales.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
