What is the difference between USDT TRC20 and ERC20?

USDT TRC20 and USDT ERC20 are the same Tether stablecoin issued on two blockchains, Tron and Ethereum, with different addresses and fee systems.

The difference between USDT TRC20 and ERC20 is the blockchain each one runs on. TRC20 USDT is Tether's stablecoin issued on Tron, and ERC20 USDT is the same stablecoin issued on Ethereum. The token is the same brand and has the same issuer, but the two versions live on separate networks with their own addresses, fees and contract code.

What is USDT TRC20?

TRC-20 is the token standard on Tron, much as ERC-20 is the token standard on Ethereum. Tether lists TRC20 on Tron among its supported protocols, with the official contract address TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t. ERC20 USDT on Ethereum uses the contract 0xdac17f958d2ee523a2206206994597c13d831ec7. The general standard is covered in what is an ERC-20 token.

A visible difference is the address. Tron's developer docs say wallets display Tron addresses as 34 characters starting with T, while Ethereum addresses start with 0x. Under the hood, a Tron address shares its last 20 bytes with the Ethereum address for the same key, but exchanges and wallets treat the two networks separately. Sending USDT on one network to a service that expects the other can leave the funds stuck or lost, so the network chosen on both sides must match.

How do TRC20 vs ERC20 fees differ?

On Ethereum, every transfer pays a gas fee in ETH. Ethereum.org explains that the fee equals gas used multiplied by the price per unit, and the base part rises when the network is busy. A USDT transfer calls a smart contract, so it uses more gas than a plain ETH transfer. You need ETH in the same wallet to move ERC20 USDT.

Tron meters two resources instead. Bandwidth covers a transaction's size, and Energy covers smart contract work, such as a USDT transfer. As of October 2026, the Tron docs say each activated account gets 600 free Bandwidth points that refill over 24 hours, but no free Energy. Users get Energy by staking TRX, by having another account delegate it to them, or by letting the network burn TRX to cover the shortfall. These parameters can change, and actual costs on both networks vary, so check the fee your wallet shows before you send.

What about USDT BEP20 and other networks?

As of October 2026, Tether's supported protocols page lists USDT on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, TON, Aptos, Near, Polkadot AssetHub, Tezos, Liquid and several Ethereum-style networks such as Avalanche and Celo. It lists older networks it no longer supports, including Omni on Bitcoin, Algorand and Bitcoin Cash's SLP.

BNB Smart Chain is not on Tether's USDT list. The USDT commonly used there, often labelled BEP20, is a Binance-Peg token. Trust Wallet describes pegged tokens as backed by reserves of the original asset and warns they should only be sent to services that support them. That makes it a different arrangement from USDT issued directly by Tether.

Which USDT network should you pick?

That depends on what the receiving wallet or exchange supports, not on the token. The safest rule is to use exactly the network the recipient names, confirm the address format matches, and send a small test first.
