What is Celo crypto and how does it work?

Celo crypto is a mobile-focused network for stablecoin payments that began as its own blockchain in 2020 and became an Ethereum layer 2 in March 2025.

Celo crypto is a blockchain network designed to make sending money from a phone cheap and simple, along with its native cryptocurrency, CELO. It started as an independent blockchain and has run as a layer 2 on top of Ethereum since March 2025. Much of its activity revolves around stablecoins rather than the CELO token itself.

What is Celo crypto?

According to Celo's own history page, the mainnet launched on Earth Day 2020 as an energy-efficient, low-cost layer 1 blockchain. Its documentation describes the original design as mobile-first, with light clients that could run on users' phones. The core developer behind the network is cLabs.

The CELO cryptocurrency has an unusual property called token duality. It is the chain's native currency, like ETH on Ethereum, and at the same time it works as a standard ERC-20 token, with one shared balance. That means apps do not need a wrapped version, unlike ETH and WETH.

Why did Celo move to an Ethereum layer 2?

cLabs proposed the move in July 2023. On March 26, 2025, the old layer 1 stopped producing blocks and Celo continued as an Ethereum layer 2 from block 31,056,500. The migration kept the full chain history, so no restart was needed.

The new Celo is built on Optimism's OP Stack, which makes it an optimistic rollup, and it uses EigenDA for data availability. Block times dropped from five seconds to one. Celo gained a native bridge to Ethereum, and the CELO token now lives on Ethereum, with CELO on the layer 2 representing bridged tokens. At first a single sequencer orders transactions, and Celo's docs say decentralized sequencing is planned later. Staking, validator elections and voting carried over from the old chain. For the general idea behind this setup, see what is a rollup.

What is a Celo crypto wallet?

A Celo wallet is any wallet that supports the Celo network. The best-known example is MiniPay, a stablecoin wallet from Opera that ships inside the Opera Mini browser on Android and as a standalone app. Celo's docs say it has passed 10 million activations.

MiniPay shows how Celo aims to work for everyday users. People can send money to a phone number instead of a long address, balances appear in local currency, and the wallet holds USDm, USDC and USDT. Users do not need to hold CELO at all, because gas fees are paid in stablecoins through a feature called fee abstraction. For developers and larger holders, Celo's docs suggest accounts created on a Ledger hardware wallet over keys generated with its command-line tool.

What are Mento stablecoins on Celo?

Mento is the stablecoin protocol native to the Celo ecosystem. Celo's docs list the Mento Dollar (USDm) as a stablecoin that users can hold, send, or exchange for CELO. On MiniPay, USDm sits alongside USDC and USDT, the two large stablecoins that are also used on Celo. Learn more about how they work in general in what is a stablecoin.

As of October 2026, Celo operates as an Ethereum layer 2 with a strong focus on mobile stablecoin payments.
