Cardano vs XRP, what is the difference?

Cardano vs XRP compares a proof-of-stake smart contract platform where ADA holders delegate stake with a payments ledger that runs on validator consensus.

Cardano vs XRP is a comparison of two long-running networks with different designs and goals. Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain where ADA holders help secure the network and vote on its future. The XRP Ledger, home of XRP, uses a consensus protocol among validators and is tuned for fast payments.

How does Cardano vs XRP consensus differ?

Cardano runs on Ouroboros, which it describes as the first provably secure proof-of-stake protocol. Time is split into epochs and slots, and for each slot a stake pool is chosen as slot leader to add a block. The more ADA delegated to a pool, the higher its chance of being chosen. The protocol stays secure as long as honest participants hold the majority of stake.

The XRP Ledger does not use staking or mining. Each server chooses a Unique Node List of validators it trusts. Validators trade proposals over several rounds until more than 80% agree, and the resulting ledger is final. If 20% or more of trusted validators are faulty, the network stops making progress instead of splitting. Anyone can run a validator without holding XRP, and the XRPL FAQ says Ripple runs one of the 35 or more on the default list. For background, see what is a consensus mechanism.

What is the difference in Cardano vs XRP use case?

Cardano is a general smart contract platform. Contracts, called validators, are written in Plutus or Aiken and decide whether funds held in the ledger's extended UTXO model can be spent. Holders can also take part in on-chain governance: they can delegate voting power to representatives called DReps, and governance actions, including treasury withdrawals, must be ratified by on-chain votes. This lets the network fund development from its own treasury.

The XRP Ledger's docs focus on payments, listing uses such as cross-border remittances, regulated foreign exchange and merchant settlement, with settlement in 3 to 5 seconds. Anyone can issue tokens on it, and stablecoins such as RLUSD and USDC run there. Trades between currencies happen on its built-in decentralized exchange. See XRP vs SWIFT for how it compares with bank messaging.

How does XRP vs Cardano staking compare?

On Cardano, ADA holders can delegate to a stake pool and earn rewards. Their ADA stays in their wallet, is not locked and is not slashed. Registering needs a refundable 2 ADA deposit, and rewards arrive about every five-day epoch after a delay of roughly 15 to 20 days.

The XRP Ledger has no native staking, because validators are not chosen by stake and the ledger does not pay them block rewards. Holding XRP on the ledger does not earn protocol rewards.

On fees, each XRP Ledger transaction destroys at least 10 drops (0.00001 XRP), and that amount rises when the network is busy. For more on staking in general, see what is crypto staking.
