The TRUMP coin is a meme coin that Donald Trump announced on social media on January 17, 2025, calling it his official Trump meme. It is a token on Solana, and the official site says it also exists on Tron. It is separate from World Liberty Financial, a different Trump-linked crypto venture.

Who is behind the official Trump meme coin?

According to the official site, CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of The Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC together own 80% of the supply. Both companies, along with Celebration Cards LLC, which owns Fight Fight Fight, receive revenue from trading activity. The Trump name and likeness are used under a license that can be revoked. The site also states that the coin is not sold or distributed by Donald Trump or The Trump Organization.

The Trump family's separate crypto business, which issues the WLFI token and the USD1 stablecoin, is covered in what is World Liberty Financial.

What is the Trump coin backed by?

Nothing. The official site describes TRUMP as a digital collectible and says it has no payment function and cannot be redeemed for goods, services or cash. It says the coin is not an investment or a security and is not political. Its value depends only on what buyers will pay.

In February 2025, staff at the US Securities and Exchange Commission said typical meme coins are not securities, so buyers do not get the disclosures that come with shares. The SEC staff added that fraud involving meme coins can still be pursued by other authorities.

How do TRUMP token unlocks work?

The site lists the allocation as 80% to the creators and CIC Digital, 10% to liquidity and 10% to public distribution. Only 200 million tokens were available at launch. The rest are released on a 36-month schedule, so the full 1 billion is due to be in circulation by early 2028.

The first large release came in April 2025, when 40 million tokens unlocked for insiders, Fortune reported. Fortune noted that the price had fallen sharply from its January peak and that it is unclear how many tokens the Trump family owns directly. Scheduled releases add to the supply that can be sold, as explained in what a token unlock is.

Why has the TRUMP coin been controversial?

In April 2025, the project announced a dinner with Trump at his golf club near Washington for the 220 largest holders. It took place on May 22, 2025. Axios reported that Democratic lawmakers and some ethics experts called the arrangement a conflict of interest, and that Democrats proposed bills to restrict such ventures. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said there were no conflicts and that the president attended in his personal time, not at a White House event.

The project presents TRUMP as a collectible with a holders' club attached. Critics point to the share of supply held by Trump-linked companies while he is in office. The official site itself warns that meme coin prices have been volatile and that holding TRUMP guarantees no benefit or event.
