XRP vs HBAR, what is the difference?
XRP vs HBAR compares the payments coin of the XRP Ledger, set by trusted validators, with Hedera's staked token on a council-run hashgraph network.
XRP vs HBAR is a comparison of two fast, low-cost networks built with business payments and tokens in mind. XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, and HBAR is the native token of Hedera. They reach agreement in very different ways, and their supply and fee rules also differ. For background, see what is XRP and what is Hedera.
Hedera vs XRP, how do they reach consensus?
The XRP Ledger has no mining and no staking. Each server picks a Unique Node List, a set of validators it trusts, and validators adjust their proposals over several rounds until enough agree. The XRPL docs say the network keeps working while fewer than 20% of trusted validators are faulty and pauses rather than confirming bad data if more fail.
Hedera uses hashgraph, which its docs describe as a directed acyclic graph, not a chain of blocks, with asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance. It stays secure while fewer than one third of nodes are malicious. Voting weight comes from HBAR staked to nodes. Hedera's staking page says there is no lock-up period and no slashing, and that consensus nodes are run by the Hedera Council, a group of up to 39 organizations.
What is the XRP vs HBAR difference in supply?
All 100 billion XRP were created in 2012, and XRPL.org says no more can be made. Ripple received 80 billion and placed much of it in escrow, as explained in XRP vs Ripple.
Hedera's total supply is 50 billion HBAR, and the Council's treasury report says it cannot change without unanimous Council consent. Not all of it is in public hands. As of the Q3 2026 report, about 43.85 billion HBAR, roughly 87.7% of the total, counted as released supply, with the rest held in Council-controlled accounts.
HBAR vs XRP speed, which settles faster?
On paper they are close. XRPL.org says XRP transactions settle in 3 to 5 seconds and cites about 1,500 transactions per second. Hedera's docs give absolute finality in 3 to 5 seconds and about 10,000 transactions per second on its public network. These are the projects' own figures, and real-world throughput depends on demand. Our guide to blockchain transactions per second explains why such numbers are hard to compare.
How do XRP and HBAR fees differ?
The XRP Ledger charges a minimum of 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP, per standard transaction, and the cost rises when the network is busy. That XRP is destroyed and paid to no one.
Hedera sets its fees in US dollars, at about $0.0001 on average for a transaction, and charges them in HBAR at the current exchange rate. The fees are not burned. Hedera's staking docs say each fee goes to a fee collection account and is distributed once a day, including to the account that pays staking rewards. As of October 2026, fee schedules on both networks can be updated, so check current figures before relying on them.
