What is Celestia crypto and what does it do?
Celestia crypto is a modular blockchain that stores and publishes transaction data for rollups, and its TIA token pays fees and secures the network.
Celestia crypto is a blockchain built to do one job well, which is making transaction data available for other chains. Instead of running apps itself, Celestia gives rollups a shared place to publish their data, and its native token TIA pays for that service.
What is the Celestia blockchain?
The Celestia docs explain that every blockchain needs four functions: execution, settlement, consensus and data availability. A "monolithic" chain does all four in one layer. Celestia is "modular," meaning its base layer handles only consensus and data availability, while rollups built on top handle execution and settlement. Many rollups can share the same data layer.
The chain itself is a proof-of-stake network built with the Cosmos SDK, running a modified version of Tendermint. It records data but does not execute the rollups' transactions or check whether they are valid.
Celestia grew out of a 2019 research paper called LazyLedger. Its mainnet beta went live on October 31, 2023, alongside the TIA token. The Block reported that 60 million TIA, 6% of the 1 billion genesis supply, was airdropped to users of Ethereum layer 2 networks, Cosmos Hub and Osmosis stakers, and developers, based on a January 1, 2023 snapshot.
What does Celestia crypto do?
Celestia's key idea is data availability sampling. Each block is split into small pieces and extended with extra recovery data. Light nodes then download a few random pieces along with cryptographic proofs instead of the whole block. If all their samples check out, it is very likely the full block was published.
This matters because the more light nodes sample, the larger blocks can safely become, without each user needing powerful hardware. Celestia also sorts data into "namespaces," so each rollup can download only its own data. For a layer 2 or rollup team, that makes Celestia a place to post data instead of, or alongside, a larger base chain.
What is the Celestia token used for?
According to the TIA overview in the official docs, TIA has four main uses as of October 2026.
- Fees. Rollups pay TIA through "PayForBlobs" transactions to post their data.
- Bootstrapping. A new rollup can use TIA as its own gas token rather than launching a new coin.
- Staking. Holders can delegate TIA to validators to help secure consensus and earn a share of rewards.
- Governance. Stakers vote on network settings and on spending from a community pool that receives 2% of block rewards.
What is the Celestia coin's supply?
TIA had 1 billion tokens at genesis. New TIA is issued as staking rewards, starting at 8% inflation in the first year and falling 10% each year until it reaches a floor of 1.5% a year. TIA has six decimal places, and its smallest unit is called utia.
