What is Cosmos (ATOM) crypto?
Cosmos crypto is a network of independent blockchains linked by the IBC protocol. ATOM is the staking and governance coin of the Cosmos Hub.
Cosmos crypto refers to a family of blockchains designed to work together, and to ATOM, the coin of the network's first chain, the Cosmos Hub. Rather than one big chain running every app, Cosmos lets each project run its own blockchain and connect it to others. The official site counts more than 200 chains in the ecosystem, as of October 2026.
Where did Cosmos crypto come from?
Jae Kwon began the project in 2014 and created the Tendermint consensus algorithm. Ethan Buchman joined in 2015, and the 2016 white paper described Cosmos as a network of distributed ledgers. The Interchain Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit in Zug, raised about $17 million in a token sale in April 2017.
The Cosmos Hub mainnet launched on March 13, 2019. Tendermint Core was later forked and renamed CometBFT in 2023. Engineering is now led by Cosmos Labs, a subsidiary of the Interchain Foundation.
What is the Cosmos SDK?
The Cosmos SDK is a toolkit for building an application-specific blockchain. Instead of deploying a smart contract on someone else's network, a team uses the SDK to launch its own chain with its own validators and rules.
The SDK is paired with CometBFT, which handles consensus, the process by which validators agree on the next block. The Cosmos site says the SDK is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine and is used by more than 150 customers.
How does IBC inter-blockchain communication work?
IBC is a standard that lets chains exchange tokens and data without a trusted middleman. Each chain runs a light client of the other, a compact way to check the other chain's state. Off-chain programs called relayers carry messages between chains. Anyone can run a relayer, and relayers cannot fake messages, because the receiving chain verifies them itself.
IBC was added to the Cosmos Hub in the February 2021 Stargate upgrade, and transfers were switched on after a governance vote in March 2021. An updated version, IBC v2, launched in 2025. The IBC site lists more than 115 connected chains.
This light-client model differs from many crypto bridges, which rely on a set of outside parties to confirm transfers. Like any cross-chain system, IBC connections still depend on the security of each chain involved.
What is the Cosmos Hub and ATOM used for?
The Cosmos Hub is the first chain in the ecosystem and the home of ATOM. Its docs describe two main uses:
- Staking. Holders delegate ATOM to validators to help secure the Hub through proof of stake and earn more ATOM in return.
- Governance. Holders vote on proposals that set the Hub's direction.
Other Cosmos chains have their own coins, so ATOM is not required to use the wider ecosystem. For another design that links many chains together, see what Polkadot is.
