What is Bonk (BONK) crypto?
Bonk (BONK) is a dog-themed meme coin on Solana, launched in December 2022 with half its supply airdropped to the Solana community.
Bonk crypto, or BONK, is a dog-themed meme coin that runs as a token on the Solana blockchain. It launched in December 2022 and was handed out mostly for free to people already active on Solana. The project calls BONK a community coin with no single leader, and its core contributors are anonymous.
Where did the bonk coin come from?
BONK appeared after the November 2022 collapse of the exchange FTX, which hit Solana hard. Decrypt describes it as a community coin created for Solana in the wake of that blow, and TokenTax notes it launched while the network was still reeling.
Like most newer meme coins, BONK is a token rather than a coin with its own blockchain. Its supply started at roughly 100 trillion tokens. In January 2023 the developers burned 5 trillion BONK, about 5% of the total, which Decrypt reports did not stop the price from falling at the time. TokenTax put the circulating supply at about 88 trillion as of June 2026.
How did the BONK airdrop work?
According to BeInCrypto and TokenTax, about 50% of the starting supply was given away in an airdrop around Christmas 2022. Recipients included Solana NFT collectors and projects, DeFi traders, artists, developers and validators. Decrypt reports that 21% went to around 40 Solana NFT projects and that a community treasury, the BonkDAO, was allocated 15.8%.
The original airdrop is closed. BeInCrypto warns that links claiming a new BONK airdrop is open are likely scams.
What is bonk coin used for?
The official BONK site describes the token as a social layer for Solana and lists hundreds of integrations as of October 2026. Its main uses include:
- Trading and tipping. BONK is traded on decentralized and centralized exchanges and used to tip people in online communities.
- Ecosystem apps. The site lists a swap service, a trading platform, games and a token launchpad.
- Trading bots. BonkBot, a Telegram bot, lets users trade Solana tokens from inside the messaging app.
The launchpad, LetsBONK (also called Bonk.fun), launched in April 2025. The Block reported that in July 2025 it briefly overtook Pump.fun in daily token launches and said it uses half of its fee revenue to buy and burn BONK. The BONK site notes that the launchpad is community-run and that tokens on it are not vetted by the BONK Foundation.
How is BONK different from other dog coins?
BONK lives on Solana, while Shiba Inu is an Ethereum token and Dogecoin has its own blockchain. Its distribution was also unusual. Rather than being sold, most of it was given to existing users, and the developers' own allocation was burned early on.
The risks are the same as for other meme coins. BONK has no earnings behind it, its price depends on attention, and holders can lose most of what they put in.
