What is Virtuals Protocol and what does it do?

Virtuals Protocol is a launchpad on Base for creating and co-owning AI agents, each with its own token paired with VIRTUAL, the protocol's native coin.

Virtuals Protocol is a crypto platform where people create AI agents and issue tokens that represent shared ownership of them. Each agent gets its own token, traded against the protocol's native coin, VIRTUAL. The project grew out of PathDAO, a gaming guild founded in 2021, and relaunched under the Virtuals name in 2024.

What is Virtuals Protocol crypto?

Bitso's help center calls Virtuals a decentralized launchpad for creating, co-owning and governing autonomous AI agents. These agents are meant to earn revenue through things like social media posting, content creation or entertainment. Decrypt reported in late 2024 that developers could give agents functions such as posting to X, chatting on Telegram, livestreaming, generating memes and making music.

Agents are built with the protocol's development kit, called GAME, which a Four Pillars research report describes as a toolkit with an SDK and an inference interface. Well-known agents launched on the platform include aixbt, which offers AI-generated market insights drawn from X, Luna and VaderAI, each with its own token.

What does Virtuals Protocol do with agent tokens?

When a new agent launches, the protocol creates 1 billion tokens for it and pairs them with VIRTUAL so they can be traded, according to Four Pillars. The report compares the launchpad to Pump.fun, the Solana memecoin site, and calls these sales Initial Agent Offerings.

Holders of an agent's token have a stake in that agent's activity, and some agents offer staking rewards to holders. Because launching an agent token is open and quick, much like launching a memecoin, the checks covered in how to research a crypto project apply here too.

What blockchain is Virtuals Protocol on?

Virtuals launched on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum layer 2 network, and most activity still happens there. On January 25, 2025, the project announced it was expanding to Solana, with 1% of trading fees set aside to build a reserve of SOL for agents and creators, Cointelegraph reported. As of October 2026, CoinGecko lists VIRTUAL contracts on Ethereum, Base and Solana, among others.

The token itself exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, and Bitso notes that holders need to bridge it to use it on Base.

What is the VIRTUAL coin used for?

VIRTUAL is the base currency of the ecosystem. The MiCA white paper filed by LCX in November 2025 lists uses including interacting with agents, taking part in Genesis Launch events for new agent tokens, ecosystem rewards called Virgen Points, and providing liquidity for agent tokens. It describes a fixed maximum supply of 1 billion VIRTUAL with no further minting, split at genesis into 60% community distribution, 35% ecosystem treasury and 5% protocol-owned liquidity. VIRTUAL was introduced in December 2023 through a one-for-one swap of the older PATH token, Decrypt reported.

The same white paper lists risks including sharp price swings, smart contract bugs, dependence on the underlying blockchains and limited legal recourse. Agent tokens add their own risks on top.
