You cannot pay federal taxes with crypto directly as of October 2026, because the IRS only accepts dollars. A handful of states have tested crypto payment options, though in each case the state receives dollars after a processor converts the coins. Whatever route you use, paying with crypto can create a new tax bill.

Can you pay the IRS with crypto?

No. The IRS payments page lists six methods: bank account, debit or credit card, digital wallet, same-day wire, check or money order, and cash. Cryptocurrency is not one of them.

A crypto debit card that converts coins to dollars at the moment of payment may work where the IRS accepts card payments, though card processing fees apply. Our guide on how crypto cards work explains the conversion.

Can you pay federal taxes with bitcoin?

Not today. A bill was introduced in Congress in June 2024 that would have let Americans pay federal income tax in bitcoin, Decrypt reported, but the IRS payments page still lists no crypto option as of October 2026.

Can you pay state taxes with crypto?

In a few places, at least for a time. Colorado started accepting crypto for state taxes on September 1, 2022. The option covered personal and business income tax, withholding, sales and use tax, severance tax and fuel excise tax. Payments ran through PayPal, which converted the coins so the state received dollars. The fee was $1 plus 1.83% of the payment, and refunds were not paid in crypto. Take-up was small: Blockworks reported in April 2023 that only 11 residents had paid state income tax that way. Check the Colorado Department of Revenue for whether the option is still offered.

Louisiana's treasurer launched crypto payments for some state services in September 2024, accepting bitcoin, the Lightning Network and USDC through a processor that converts them to dollars. The first payment was a $50 wildlife fine. Reports did not confirm that tax payments were included. Utah passed a 2022 bill allowing state agencies to accept crypto for taxes, Decrypt reported, but we could not confirm a current program. Is paying taxes with crypto a taxable event?

Usually, in the US. The IRS says that paying for a service with crypto you hold as a capital asset is an exchange of that asset, which produces a capital gain or loss. The amount is the value of what you paid for minus your cost basis in the coins. So if your bitcoin has risen in value, paying a tax bill with it can add to next year's bill.

The same logic covers other spending, as explained in can you pay bills with crypto and how crypto is taxed in the US.
