How is crypto taxed in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh has no crypto tax regime because its central bank does not permit crypto transactions, treating them as a breach of foreign exchange law.
Bangladesh has no crypto tax regime. Instead of setting tax rates for crypto trading, the authorities treat crypto transactions as not permitted, so there is no official guidance on how gains would be calculated or reported. As of October 2026, the question in Bangladesh is legality first, tax second.
Is cryptocurrency legal in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh Bank, the central bank, does not allow it. In a September 2022 notice, reported by bdnews24 and The Financial Express, it said transactions to obtain virtual assets are not permitted and that it does not allow anyone to facilitate businesses that exchange, transfer or trade them. It also warned exporters not to accept payment in crypto or keep export proceeds abroad in that form, and reminded the public that buying crypto with foreign exchange is prohibited. It had made a similar statement in July 2021.
The legal basis is not a crypto statute. The central bank says the definition of currency in the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1947 does not cover virtual currencies, and that anonymous online crypto deals may breach the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012. A January 2026 column in The Financial Express notes that no law directly makes holding crypto a crime, but that these acts have been read to prohibit transactions. Is there a crypto trading tax in Bangladesh?
No. Neither the January 2026 Financial Express column nor a July 2025 opinion piece in the Daily Observer identified any existing crypto tax. Both argued that Bangladesh should build a regulated framework that defines taxation. The Observer piece proposed graduated rates on realized gains, but this is a proposal from a commentator, not law.
Bangladesh does tax capital gains on other assets. KPMG notes that from July 1, 2025, a flat 15% tax applies to individuals' gains from selling listed securities, whatever the holding period. That rule covers listed securities only and says nothing about crypto.
Does that mean crypto gains in Bangladesh are tax-free?
No official source says so. The absence of a crypto tax reflects the central bank's view that the transactions themselves are not permitted, not an exemption. bdnews24 also reported that several people had been arrested for using crypto in crimes. Anyone with crypto income connected to another country may also have tax duties there. For comparison, India's flat 30% rate is described in how crypto is taxed in India, and other systems in crypto tax around the world.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
