What is USDT0?
USDT0 is an omnichain version of Tether's USDT that moves between blockchains using LayerZero, backed 1 to 1 by USDT locked on Ethereum.
USDT0 is an omnichain form of USDT, the dollar stablecoin issued by Tether. Instead of Tether issuing a separate USDT on every blockchain, USDT0 lets one pool of USDT move across many chains through LayerZero messaging. Each USDT0 is backed 1 to 1 by USDT held in a contract on Ethereum.
How does USDT0 work with LayerZero?
LayerZero's OFT standard keeps a single global supply of a token across chains. When a token already exists, an OFT Adapter can lock it on its home chain and release or mint a matching amount elsewhere.
USDT0 follows that model. According to Hedera's developer docs, the original USDT sits in an OFT Adapter contract on Ethereum mainnet. Locking USDT there lets an equal amount of USDT0 be minted on another chain. Moving USDT0 from one chain to another burns it on the source chain and mints it on the destination. Redeeming burns USDT0 and unlocks the original USDT, so the total never changes. Our guide to LayerZero covers the messaging network itself.
What is the difference between USDT and USDT0?
Both track the US dollar, but they are issued differently:
- USDT is issued directly by Tether on chains it supports, such as Ethereum and Tron. See USDT on TRC-20 vs ERC-20.
- USDT0 is a separate token on other chains, operated by Everdawn Labs and backed by USDT locked on Ethereum. The Block reported that it began as a startup within the Tether ecosystem.
Hedera's docs describe USDT0 as not a wrapped or synthetic token with its own reserve, since its value depends on the locked USDT. Even so, it relies on smart contracts and the LayerZero network in a way native USDT does not, which adds its own technical risks. A wallet or exchange may treat the two as different assets, so it matters which one you are sending. For the general idea of moving tokens across chains, see how to bridge crypto.
Which networks support USDT0?
The list keeps growing. The Block reported 15 networks in November 2025, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Ink, Plasma, HyperLiquid, Solana, Rootstock and Conflux. As of October 2026, Stellar's docs say USDT0 connects Stellar to more than 26 networks, and Hedera also lists it as live on its mainnet.
Stellar's docs also describe a "Legacy Mesh" that links chains where Tether already issues native USDT, including Ethereum, Tron, TON, Arbitrum, Solana and Celo, through a hub on Arbitrum.
What does it cost to move USDT0?
A sender pays the source chain's normal network fee plus a LayerZero messaging fee. As of October 2026, Stellar's docs say USDT0's own protocol fee is zero on most routes and 0.03% on others. Transfer times vary by route, from about a minute to around 20 minutes in Stellar's examples. Always check the official USDT0 documentation and the receiving platform before sending, because a token sent on a network the recipient does not support can be hard to recover.
