Crypto is legal in Bahrain. People can buy, hold and trade it, and the Central Bank of Bahrain has run a licensing regime for crypto firms since 2019. As of October 2026 that regime also covers stablecoin issuers.

Is bitcoin legal in Bahrain?

Yes. Bitcoin and other crypto assets can be traded through licensed platforms. The CBB is the country's single financial regulator and applies one framework to crypto firms and to banks, insurers and investment firms, Gulf Daily News reported. Licensed firms must meet anti-money-laundering requirements.

Is crypto trading legal in Bahrain?

Yes, through licensed firms. The CBB's crypto-asset module, known as CRA and first issued in February 2019, says no one may market or carry out regulated crypto services in or from Bahrain by way of business without a CBB license. Regulated services include taking and executing orders, dealing on own account, portfolio management, custody, investment advice and running an exchange.

Licenses come in four categories:

  • Category 1 covers order handling and advice, without holding client assets.
  • Category 2 adds custody, agency trading and portfolio management.
  • Category 3 also allows dealing on the firm's own account.
  • Category 4 allows operating a licensed crypto exchange.

Before offering crypto products to retail clients, licensees must check that the products are suitable and appropriate for them. Examples of licensed firms include Binance Bahrain, which received a Category 4 license in 2022, and Fasset Financial Services, which received a Category 3 license on January 23, 2025.

Are stablecoins regulated in Bahrain?

Yes. On July 4, 2025, the CBB issued a Stablecoin Issuance and Offering module. It lets licensed issuers create single-currency stablecoins backed by the Bahraini dinar, the US dollar or another fiat currency the CBB accepts. The CBB said the aim is to reduce risks from unregulated stablecoins.

Is crypto mining legal in Bahrain?

The CBB's rules do not treat mining as a regulated service. The CRA module expressly excludes developing, distributing or using software to create or mine crypto assets, so a miner does not need a CBB crypto license for that activity alone. Other laws, such as those on electricity use, may still apply. For the wider picture, see is crypto mining legal.
