Is crypto legal in Ecuador?
Crypto is legal to buy and hold in Ecuador, but it is not legal tender or an authorized payment method, and the central bank warns against paying with it.
Crypto is legal to buy and hold in Ecuador, but it is not legal tender and may not be used as a means of payment. As of October 2026 the country has no complete crypto law, though anti-money-laundering rules now cover crypto firms and a dedicated bill is before the National Assembly.
Is crypto banned in Ecuador?
No, investing is not banned. On August 12, 2024, the Banco Central del Ecuador (BCE) and the monetary policy board said crypto assets are neither legal tender nor an authorized means of payment, Primicias reported. They added that if the BCE finds crypto being used to pay for things, it will inform the Attorney General's office.
The statement caused confusion, so the BCE's general manager, Guillermo Avellán, clarified that the bank had never banned crypto investment because doing so is outside its powers, CriptoNoticias reported. The line is between investing, which is allowed, and paying with crypto, which is not authorized. The BCE took a similar view in January 2018, saying online crypto trading is not prohibited.
Is bitcoin legal in Ecuador?
Yes, as an investment. Bitcoin can be bought and sold, but it is not money. Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency in January 2000, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and the BCE lists the authorized payment methods as physical cash, electronic means such as cards and transfers, and e-wallets.
What are Ecuador's crypto laws?
The first Ecuadorian law to mention crypto is an anti-money-laundering law, nicknamed the Ley Antipillos, which amended the monetary and financial code and was reported by Expreso in December 2024. It names virtual asset service providers as obliged entities and requires them to report transaction details to the financial intelligence unit, UAFE, Expreso reported. The head of UAFE said the government would control crypto use rather than restrict it. More on these rules is in crypto anti-money-laundering rules.
On October 2, 2026, assembly member Inés Alarcón presented a Ley Orgánica de Activos Virtuales. It would require providers to register, demand extra permits for higher-risk operations, and split oversight among the BCE, several superintendencies and UAFE. It was a proposal, not law, when this guide was updated.
Does Ecuador use bitcoin?
Not officially. Some merchants and providers have accepted it, Primicias reported in 2021, but the BCE's position since 2024 is that crypto payments are not authorized and can lead to sanctions.
