What is Zengo wallet and how does it work?

Zengo is a self-custody mobile crypto wallet that replaces the seed phrase with MPC, splitting signing between your phone and Zengo's server.

Zengo wallet is a self-custody crypto app for iPhone and Android that does not use a seed phrase. Instead, it relies on multi-party computation (MPC) to split signing power between your phone and Zengo's servers. Zengo says it cannot move funds on its own, because its share alone is not enough to sign.

How does the Zengo MPC wallet work?

Zengo's help center explains that the wallet never creates one complete private key. Two secret shares are generated independently, a personal share on your device and a remote share on Zengo's server. When you send crypto, the two shares work together to produce a valid signature without either side revealing its secret to the other. Only you can start a transaction, though Zengo's server checks each one before it is broadcast.

This is a different setup from a standard wallet built on a seed phrase, where whoever holds the words controls the funds. Our guide on what is an MPC wallet explains the general technology.

How do you recover a Zengo wallet without a seed phrase?

Zengo uses what it calls a Recovery Kit, which it says should be set up before you deposit funds. An encrypted copy of your device share is kept on Zengo's server, and the key to decrypt it sits in a recovery file in your own iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox.

As of October 2026, Zengo's help center says two factors are required to recover: access to your email and the recovery file in your cloud account. A 3D FaceLock face scan was mandatory until May 23, 2024, and is now recommended but optional for basic recovery. Zengo does not keep a copy of the recovery file, so losing it can make the wallet unrecoverable.

What happens if Zengo shuts down?

Because Zengo's server holds one key share, users depend on the company to sign. Zengo says it has a guaranteed access arrangement run by independent software escrow and trustee firms, which can trigger recovery through a public GitHub repository if Zengo stops operating. For the custody trade-offs involved, see custodial vs non-custodial wallets.

Is Zengo wallet safe?

Zengo describes its MPC cryptography as open source, audited and peer reviewed, and its security page lists audits by firms including Kudelski, Scorpiones and CertiK between 2019 and 2023. It also says no Zengo wallet has been hacked since 2018, which is the company's own claim rather than an independent finding. The app includes a Web3 firewall that warns about known wallet drainers.

In January 2024, Zengo ran a public challenge, reported by Cryptonews, in which it placed up to 10 BTC in a wallet and gradually released two of its three recovery factors to see whether anyone could take the funds. As with any phone-based hot wallet, the security of the device, email account and cloud account matters, because those form the recovery path.
