How is crypto taxed in Namibia?
Namibia has no crypto tax rules and no general capital gains tax, so crypto falls under the general source-based income tax with no specific guidance.
Namibia has no crypto tax as of October 2026. The Virtual Assets Act 2023 lets the Bank of Namibia license crypto businesses, but it does not say how crypto is taxed, and we found no published guidance from the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA). That leaves the general income tax rules.
Is there a crypto tax in Namibia?
Not a specific one. When the Virtual Assets Bill was going through parliament in 2023, Eagle FM reported that there was no clarity on how the tax system would handle virtual assets and that the bill did not deal with tax. The Act was signed on July 14, 2023 and published in the Government Gazette on July 21, 2023, Cointelegraph reported. Nothing we found since then sets out crypto tax rules.
Some reports in 2023 said Namibia had imposed a tax on crypto. Those reports referred to the licensing law, not a tax law.
How are crypto gains taxed in Namibia?
There is no direct answer in the law. PwC says capital gains are not taxed in Namibia, apart from gains on mining and petroleum licences and certain related share transfers. PwC also says Namibia has a source-based tax system, so income from a Namibian source, or deemed to be, is taxable unless exempt.
Whether a crypto profit counts as an untaxed capital gain or as taxable income has not been addressed by NamRA in any guidance we found. In many source-based systems the answer depends on facts such as how often someone trades, but that is not confirmed for crypto in Namibia. Keeping records of each trade helps either way, as explained in what is crypto cost basis.
What are the Namibia tax rates that could apply?
If crypto income is taxable, the general rates are the reference. For the year from March 1, 2025, PwC lists individual rates from 0% on the first NAD 100,000 up to 37% above NAD 1,550,000. Companies pay 30% for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, down from 31%. A licensed crypto exchange would pay corporate tax on its profits like any other company.
Is Namibia cryptocurrency legal?
Crypto is regulated rather than banned, and it is not legal tender. Crypto firms need a Bank of Namibia licence, and licensing has been slow. See is crypto legal in Namibia, and compare with how crypto is taxed in South Africa and crypto tax around the world.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
