Does Coinbase report to the IRS?
Yes, Coinbase IRS reporting covers crypto sales on Form 1099-DA from 2025, plus Form 1099-MISC for at least $2,000 of rewards and other income.
Yes, Coinbase reports to the IRS. As a custodial broker, it issues Form 1099-DA for crypto sales and exchanges, and the IRS says the statements customers receive carry the same information reported to the agency. Coinbase also sends other 1099 forms for rewards and income. The details below come from Coinbase's help pages and IRS guidance as of October 2026. The forms themselves are explained in crypto tax forms.
Does Coinbase send a 1099-DA?
Yes. Coinbase says it is required to issue Form 1099-DA to all US customers starting with the 2025 tax year. It promised the 2025 form by March 17, 2026, with an email when ready. The form shows:
- gross proceeds from selling crypto for dollars
- crypto-to-crypto trades
- crypto sold or used to pay network fees on sends
The amount you send to another address is not reported, only the fee. Coinbase uses Eastern Time, so a trade just after midnight ET on January 1, 2026 falls on the 2026 form.
Does the Coinbase 1099-DA show cost basis?
Not for 2025. The 2025 form shows proceeds only. From the 2026 tax year, IRS rules require basis for covered assets, meaning crypto bought after 2025 in a Coinbase account and held there until sale. Crypto bought earlier or transferred in is noncovered, so Coinbase may not report its basis. Coinbase suggests checking and editing basis in Coinbase Taxes. See what is crypto cost basis.
Does Coinbase send a 1099-MISC?
Coinbase says it issues Form 1099-MISC to customers who earned at least $2,000 in crypto and miscellaneous income, such as staking rewards and incentives. It also issues Form 1099-B for futures and other instruments, and Form 1099-DIV for more than $10 in dividends. From the 2025 tax year, the Coinbase Tax Center no longer provides a ready-made Form 8949; Coinbase points customers to tax software partners instead.
No form does not mean no tax. Income below a form threshold must still be reported, as explained in do you have to report crypto under $600.
What Coinbase activity is not on its tax documents?
Coinbase says its tax reports cover Coinbase.com only, not Coinbase Wallet. Trades on decentralized exchanges are left off its IRS forms because they happen on third-party protocols from a self-custody wallet. The IRS likewise excludes decentralized, non-custodial brokers from 1099-DA reporting.
The IRS has also obtained Coinbase records directly. In November 2017 a federal court in California ordered Coinbase to hand over details on customers with at least $20,000 of activity in any year from 2013 to 2015, which Coinbase estimated at up to 14,355 account holders.
