Crypto tax in Greece is in the middle of being written. As of October 2026 the country has no dedicated framework for taxing crypto profits, but the Ministry of National Economy and Finance has put a draft bill out for public consultation that would tax individuals' crypto gains at 10%. Until it passes, the details below are proposals, not law.

Does Greece tax crypto right now?

Greece has not had a specific legal framework for taxing crypto gains, according to government officials quoted by Reuters in June 2026. That leaves a gap that the new bill is meant to fill. In June 2026 the plan reported by Reuters was a 15% rate. The draft published in October lowered that to 10%.

What is the proposed Greece crypto tax rate?

Under the draft bill, as summarized by Greek tax news site Taxrevenue.gr and regulatory tracker RegFollower:

  • Rate. 10% on capital gains of individuals from transferring crypto assets.
  • Exemption. Net gains up to €500 per tax year are not taxed.
  • What counts as a transfer. Selling crypto for money, paying for goods or services with it, and contributing it to a company's capital.
  • Cost basis. The gain is the sale price minus the acquisition cost, with an average cost method for repeated purchases. The cost basis is treated as zero if it cannot be shown.
  • Losses. RegFollower reports that losses above €500 could be carried forward for five years against future crypto gains only.

The consultation closes on October 22, 2026, and the start date will come from the final text.

How would crypto trading, swaps and staking be taxed in Greece?

Taxrevenue.gr and Cointelegraph report that swapping one crypto asset for another would not create a taxable gain under the draft. Tax would apply when crypto is turned into money or used to pay for something.

Returns from staking, lending and providing liquidity would be treated as interest and taxed at 10%. The draft does not clearly address crypto activity run as a business. Reuters reported in June that individual mining would not be taxed but corporate mining would be.

The bill also offers a voluntary disclosure window. People who made gains before the rules take effect could declare them within 12 months without fines or interest. For inheritance and gift tax, crypto would be treated as intangible property located abroad.

Will the Greek tax office know about crypto holdings?

Increasingly, yes. Greece must apply the EU's DAC8 directive, under which crypto service providers collect EU users' transaction data from January 1, 2026, with first exchanges between national authorities due by September 30, 2027. Greece has also committed to the OECD's reporting framework for crypto.

Other EU countries already have settled rules. Italy, for example, taxes gains at 33% as explained in how crypto is taxed in Italy, and the wider picture is in crypto tax around the world.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
