Ethiopia has no crypto tax as such, and as of October 2026 the main question is not tax but legality. Crypto may not be used for payments, and no exchange is licensed, yet licensed companies are allowed to mine bitcoin. Those mining companies pay tax under the general income tax law.

Is cryptocurrency legal in Ethiopia?

Only in a narrow sense. The National Bank of Ethiopia says the birr is the only legal tender, and Proclamation No. 1359/2024 explicitly prohibits using crypto for payments, according to legal publisher Afriwise. The central bank has also warned people away from trading. Licensed bitcoin mining is the main exception. The full picture is in is crypto legal in Ethiopia.

Because payments and trading are not permitted, there is no tax regime for individuals selling crypto. Tax rules do not make an activity legal.

Is there an Ethiopia crypto tax?

No specific one. Ethiopia amended its income tax law in July 2025 through Proclamation No. 1395/2025. EY's summary covers new rules on digital content and digital services, minimum tax and capital gains, but does not mention crypto, virtual assets or mining. KPMG's overview also does not mention them. For individuals, EY notes the top rate on employment income is 35%, and the resident rate on gains from disposing of assets is 15%.

Afriwise says the income tax law reaches every form of economic benefit, including non-recurring gains, and that there are no specific crypto tax guidelines yet.

How is crypto mining in Ethiopia taxed?

Under general rules. Afriwise says mining earnings fall under Income Tax Proclamation No. 979/2016, which covers bitcoin received as mining rewards and its later sale or exchange. It applies to Ethiopian tax residents and to foreign firms with a permanent establishment in the country. PwC lists the corporate income tax rate at 30%.

Afriwise also lists VAT, customs duties, the social welfare levy, dividend tax and capital gains tax as taxes that may apply. Miners licensed as data centre and cloud service businesses may qualify for an income tax holiday of four years in and around Addis Ababa, or five years elsewhere, plus duty-free import of capital goods. Miners pay for state electricity in foreign currency. For general background, see how is crypto mining taxed and is crypto mining legal.
