When do you pay crypto taxes?

In the US you pay crypto taxes for the year a sale or income happens, through quarterly estimated payments, withholding or the return due each April 15.

In the United States, you pay crypto taxes for the year in which a taxable event happens, such as selling crypto or receiving it as pay. The bill is usually settled through withholding, quarterly estimated payments, or the annual tax return.

Do you pay crypto taxes immediately?

Not at the moment of the trade. The tax is created when the event happens, but it is paid later. What counts as an event is set out in how crypto is taxed in the US, and simply holding is covered in do you pay tax on crypto if you don't sell.

The IRS describes the system as pay-as-you-go. Income without withholding, such as investment gains or self-employment income, is meant to be paid during the year through estimated tax. Waiting until the return can lead to a penalty, even if you pay in full then.

Do you pay tax when you sell crypto?

The sale creates a gain or loss for that year, measured against your cost basis. Crypto received as income, for example as pay, is valued in dollars when you receive it and counts for that year.

A large gain alone does not always mean a quarterly payment is required. The IRS says you generally must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and credits, and your withholding and credits will be less than the smaller of:

  • 90% of this year's tax
  • 100% of last year's tax, or 110% if last year's adjusted gross income was more than $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately)

How do estimated tax payments for crypto work?

Form 1040-ES is the IRS form used to figure and pay estimated tax. For 2026, the four due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The January payment is not needed if the full 2026 return is filed and paid by February 1, 2027.

Each payment covers a set period. A gain from June 1 to August 31 is matched to the September 15 payment, for example. Because crypto gains often arrive unevenly, the IRS lets people with uneven income use the annualized income installment method, which can vary the payment amounts. That uses a worksheet in Publication 505 and Schedule AI with Form 2210.

Increasing withholding from a paycheck is another way to cover the amount. Form 2210 is also where you work out whether a penalty applies.

What is the crypto tax due date?

The annual return for calendar-year filers is due April 15, so 2026 returns are due in April 2027. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day. Form 4868 gives six more months to file, but the IRS says an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Gains and losses are reported on the crypto tax forms.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
