How is crypto taxed in Bulgaria?
Bulgaria crypto tax treats gains on crypto as income from selling financial assets, taxed at a flat 10% for individuals and declared by April 30 each year.
Bulgaria does tax crypto. For individuals, Bulgarian tax practice treats crypto as a financial asset, so the profit from selling it counts as income from the disposal of financial assets. That income is taxed at Bulgaria's flat personal income tax rate of 10%. The National Revenue Agency (NRA) administers the rules, although Bulgaria has no stand-alone crypto tax law.
What is the crypto tax rate in Bulgaria?
The rate is 10% of the net gain. The gain on each sale is the selling price minus what you paid. Some advisers also describe a fixed 10% cost deduction under the income tax law, which lowers the effective rate slightly.
A different rate can apply to people who trade as a business. If crypto trading is systematic and set up as an independent business, advisers say it is taxed as business income at 15%. Mining is usually treated the same way.
Does Bulgaria tax bitcoin swaps and staking?
Yes for swaps. There is no deferral for exchanging bitcoin for another coin. Each swap, and each use of crypto to pay for goods or services, is a disposal, so a gain can arise even when you never touch euros. The value of the coin you receive becomes its new cost basis.
Staking rewards and airdrops are generally treated as having a zero cost. Tax guides describe the whole sale price as the gain when you later sell them. One firm notes this view rests on non-binding positions from the tax authority, so treatment can vary.
Losses are limited. They can offset gains made in the same year, but advisers say they cannot be carried forward. See crypto losses and taxes for the general idea.
How do you report crypto under Bulgaria crypto law?
You do not need to declare simply buying crypto. Taxable gains go on the annual personal income tax return, in the annex for income from financial assets, and the return and payment are due by April 30 of the following year. For 2026 income, that is April 30 2027.
The NRA has checked compliance before. In 2019 it began inspections of nine crypto exchanges in Bulgaria to verify that users and companies were declaring their income.
Bulgaria joined the euro on January 1 2026 at a fixed rate of 1.95583 lev per euro. Returns for 2026 income are filled in euros, while 2025 income declared in 2026 uses lev figures. Bulgaria is also bound by DAC8, the EU directive adopted in October 2023 that extends tax information sharing between member states to crypto-assets. Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
