Yes, Finland taxes crypto. The Finnish Tax Administration (Vero) treats gains from crypto as capital income, taxed at 30% on capital income up to €30,000 and 34% on the part above. Every disposal counts, including swaps between coins, so active traders can have many taxable events in a year.

Which crypto trades are taxed in Finland?

Vero lists four kinds of taxable disposal:

  • exchanging crypto for euros or another official currency
  • exchanging one crypto asset for another
  • paying invoices with crypto
  • buying goods or services with crypto

Holding crypto without disposing of it does not need to go on the tax return. Finland's Supreme Administrative Court has ruled that virtual currencies are assets, not securities or legal tender, which is why ordinary capital gains rules apply.

There is a small disposals rule. If the total selling prices of all assets an individual sells in a year are €1,000 or less, the gains are tax-free. The limit covers all sales that year, not just crypto.

How are Finland crypto capital gains calculated?

The gain is the selling price minus the purchase price and costs such as trading fees. When you bought the same coin several times, Vero treats the oldest units as sold first (first in, first out, or FIFO) unless you can show otherwise. The guide to crypto cost basis explains the idea.

If you cannot show what you paid, you may use a deemed acquisition cost instead. It is 20% of the selling price for crypto held under 10 years and 40% for crypto held longer. Actual costs cannot be deducted on top of it.

Losses are deducted first from capital gains, then from other capital income. Anything left can be carried forward for five years.

How are mining and staking taxed in Finland?

Proof-of-work mining is earned income, valued in euros when the coins are received. Costs such as extra electricity and part of the equipment can be deducted from it. Staking and lending rewards are capital income. When mined or staked coins are later sold, that sale is a separate capital gain event.

Is there a crypto tax calculator in Finland?

Vero offers its own FIFO calculator on its website to help work out gains and losses. Gains go in MyTax under capital income, with the property type set to crypto assets, and records should be kept for six years after the tax year. Many people also use crypto tax software.

From January 1, 2026, licensed crypto service providers collect data on users' purchases, sales and transfers. Vero expects the first reports in early 2027 and international exchanges by September 2027. Sweden, next door, also taxes crypto as capital income, as covered in how crypto is taxed in Sweden.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
