Can you reverse a crypto transaction?
You generally cannot reverse a crypto transaction once it is confirmed. There is no chargeback, so money comes back only if the recipient returns it.
You generally cannot reverse a crypto transaction. Once a transfer is confirmed on the blockchain, no bank, exchange or wallet provider can pull it back. Coinbase states plainly that crypto transactions are final and cannot be canceled or reversed.
Can you cancel a crypto transaction?
Only before it is confirmed, and not always then. A transaction that is still waiting to be included in a block can sometimes be replaced with a new version, which is how wallets offer a speed-up or cancel button. Our guide to the Bitcoin mempool explains how that works and its limits.
Some platforms also let you cancel internal transfers that have not been sent to the blockchain yet. Coinbase, for example, says a send to an email address can be cancelled while it is pending, and returns unclaimed funds after 30 days. Once a payment is on-chain and confirmed, the cancel option is gone.
Why are crypto transactions irreversible?
Irreversibility was a design choice. The 2008 bitcoin white paper argued that card and bank payments are reversible because a financial institution has to mediate disputes, and that this raises costs and forces merchants to be wary of customers. Bitcoin replaced that trust with cryptographic proof.
There is also no central operator to undo anything. Each new block added on top of a transaction makes it harder to change. The white paper calculates that an attacker's chance of rewriting a payment falls sharply with every confirmation, unless that attacker controls most of the network's computing power, a scenario known as a 51% attack.
Can you dispute crypto transactions?
Not in the way you dispute a card charge. The Federal Trade Commission says crypto payments do not come with legal protections and generally have no dispute process. It adds that money typically comes back only if the recipient sends it.
Platforms can only act on what they control. Cash App's bitcoin disclosures say bitcoin transactions may be irreversible and that it is not responsible for mistaken or accidental transfers. If it spots an improper transaction, it says it may take reasonable steps to reverse it but is not obligated to, and those steps may be unavailable. Cash App also says it cannot recover stablecoins sent to an unsupported address or network.
Can you refund crypto transactions?
Yes, but only voluntarily. A merchant can send a refund as a new, separate payment, and a person who received crypto by mistake can send it back. Coinbase's advice for a wrong address is to contact the recipient and ask for their cooperation, and it says recovery is not possible if the owner is unknown. Our guide on sending crypto to the wrong address covers those cases.
If you were scammed, the FTC takes reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and our guide on what to do if you are scammed lists other steps. Be wary of anyone promising to reverse a blockchain payment for a fee, a common recovery scam.
