Binance vs Coinbase: what is the difference?
Binance vs Coinbase compares a private global exchange regulated in Abu Dhabi with a US-listed company, by availability, licensing, fees and security.
Binance vs Coinbase is a comparison between the world's largest crypto exchange by spot trading volume and a US crypto company listed on Nasdaq. Both let you buy, sell and hold crypto, but they are owned, licensed and priced in different ways, and they serve different countries. Here are the differences as of October 2026, set out without ranking them.
Is Binance available in the US?
Not the global exchange. The Justice Department says Binance announced in 2019 that it would block US customers and launched Binance.US, but kept serving many US users anyway. In November 2023 Binance pleaded guilty to US anti-money laundering, money transmitting and sanctions violations and agreed to pay about $4.3 billion. The wider story is in why Binance is banned in some countries.
Coinbase, by contrast, says in its 2025 annual report that it holds state money transmitter licences where required, a New York BitLicense, and a MiCA licence through Luxembourg for the European Economic Area.
How do ownership and licensing compare?
Coinbase's Class A shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker COIN, and it files audited accounts with the SEC. Binance is private. In March 2025 Abu Dhabi investment firm MGX bought a minority stake for $2 billion, paid in stablecoins, The Block reported, describing it as Binance's first institutional investment.
In December 2025, Gulf News reported that Binance.com received authorisation from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Abu Dhabi Global Market for three entities covering its exchange, clearing and custody, and broker-dealer services. Binance planned to begin those regulated activities on January 5, 2026.
How do Binance vs Coinbase fees compare?
As of October 2026, Binance's fee page lists 0.1% maker and 0.1% taker for regular spot users, cut by 25% when fees are paid in its BNB token. Lower VIP rates require at least $1 million in 30-day volume plus a minimum BNB balance.
Coinbase's simple screen includes a spread in the quoted price plus a Coinbase fee that varies by payment method, size, asset and location, shown before you confirm. Its advanced platform uses maker and taker fees instead, explained in what Coinbase Advanced is.
What is the difference between Binance and Binance.US?
Binance.US is a separate company that licenses the brand and serves US customers under US rules, as covered in Binance vs Binance.US. Its help page, updated June 3, 2026, lists 16 states and territories where sign-up is unavailable, including New York, Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Washington.
Both firms have security incidents on record. In May 2019, Binance lost about 7,000 bitcoin from its hot wallet after attackers obtained API keys and two-factor codes, Decrypt reported, and it covered the loss from its SAFU emergency fund. Coinbase's 2025 customer data theft is covered in is Coinbase safe.
