How do you buy bitcoin with a bank account?
To buy bitcoin with a bank account, link the account to an exchange by ACH or wire, move dollars in, then place a buy order. Timing and holds vary.
To buy bitcoin with a bank account, you link a US checking or savings account to a crypto exchange or broker app, move dollars in, and then use that balance to buy. The two main ways money travels are ACH, the US network for routine bank transfers, and wire transfers. The details below are based on platform help pages as of October 2026. The general buying process is covered in how to buy cryptocurrency.
How do you buy bitcoin with an account and routing number?
Most platforms offer two ways to link a bank. The quick way is instant verification, where you sign in to your bank through a service such as Plaid or Stripe. Coinbase lists this alongside a manual method, where you enter the routing and account numbers and then confirm small test deposits sent to the account. Kraken notes that a transfer needing two micro-deposits to verify is a sign you are using ACH rather than a wire.
Coinbase says the name on the bank account must match the name on the Coinbase account. A mismatch goes to manual review, which takes one to three business days.
How do you buy crypto with ACH?
ACH payments run under rules set by Nacha, the body that governs the network. When an exchange pulls money from your bank, that is an ACH debit. Nacha says debits settle the same day or the next banking day, and about 80% of all ACH payments settle within one banking day.
Platforms often let you trade before that settlement is final. Kraken lists ACH deposits through Plaid as free and near-instant, with a 7-day hold before withdrawals. Robinhood says instant accounts typically get up to $1,000 of buying power for crypto right away, with the rest available after normal settlement. Coinbase says it requests the money from your bank within three to five days and that held cash cannot be withdrawn until it arrives, which is explained in why is my crypto on hold on Coinbase.
Can you buy bitcoin with a wire transfer?
Usually you wire dollars in first and then buy. Coinbase lists wires for adding cash and cashing out, not for buying directly. It says wires take one to three business days and typically process the same business day if sent before 1 p.m. Pacific time. Kraken lists Fedwire deposits as free on its side, credited within zero to one business day, with no withdrawal hold. Kraken adds that banks typically charge about $25 to $30 to send a wire.
How long does a bank transfer to a crypto exchange take?
It depends on the rail and the platform:
- ACH. Coinbase quotes one to five business days. Some platforms credit the money sooner but restrict withdrawals until it settles.
- Wire. Often the same or next business day, depending on cutoff times.
- Holds. Crypto bought with unsettled funds may not be sendable to an outside wallet yet. Robinhood says such crypto can be transferred out after normal settlement times.
