Kraken vs Coinbase: what is the difference?
Kraken vs Coinbase compares two US-founded exchanges that differ in ownership, US state coverage, licences, fee models and how they disclose reserves.
Kraken vs Coinbase is a comparison between two of the oldest US-founded crypto exchanges. Both let you buy, sell and hold crypto through an easy app and a separate advanced platform, but they differ in who owns them, where they operate, how they charge and how they show what they hold. This guide sets out those differences as of October 2026 without ranking them.
How do Kraken vs Coinbase fees compare?
On the simple screens, both build a spread into the quoted price and add a fee. Kraken's fee schedule lists 1% on instant and recurring buys and sells and 1.5% on custom orders. Its paid Kraken+ plan waives that fee on up to $10,000 a month, though spreads and card fees still apply.
Coinbase says its simple trades carry a spread plus a separate Coinbase fee that depends on payment method, order size, asset and location, shown in the preview before you confirm. Limit orders on the simple screen pay a 1% execution fee. Coinbase One offers zero trading fees within limits, but not on that limit order fee.
How does Kraken Pro compare with Coinbase Advanced?
Both are order-book platforms with no spread, charging maker and taker fees by 30-day volume. As of October 2026, Kraken Pro's entry tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, and its tier can also be set by assets held on the platform. Coinbase said on September 16, 2026 that its US spot entry rates are 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker, with tiers starting at $10,000 in volume and also reachable by holding USDC. Both cut rates sharply at high volume. Our guide to Coinbase Advanced covers its order types.
Is Kraken available in the US?
Mostly. Kraken's licensing page, updated September 30, 2026, says it does not serve residents of Maine or New York. Indiana residents cannot transfer crypto, and cash transfers are unavailable in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Utah. Its US entities include a FinCEN-registered money services business, a Wyoming special purpose depository institution and an SEC-registered broker-dealer. In Europe it holds MiCA authorisation from the Central Bank of Ireland.
Coinbase's 2025 annual report says it holds money transmitter licences where states require them, a New York BitLicense, and a MiCA licence through Luxembourg.
What is the difference between Coinbase and Kraken for beginners?
The everyday apps work in a similar way, so the bigger differences for a new user are structural. Coinbase files audited results with the SEC as a public company. Payward confidentially submitted a draft IPO registration in November 2025 and has not listed, so Kraken publishes less financial detail. Kraken instead publishes proof of reserves. Its June 30, 2026 snapshot showed reserves slightly above 100% for assets including BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP, though the page notes this does not prove funds were not borrowed.
Coinbase says its main exchange lists more than 360 crypto assets. Kraken's safety record is covered in is Kraken safe, and Coinbase's in is Coinbase safe.
