Crypto is legal in Georgia, the country in the South Caucasus rather than the US state, as of October 2026. People can buy, hold, trade and mine crypto. Businesses that provide crypto services, such as exchanges and kiosks, must be registered with and supervised by the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), and the rules have tightened steadily since 2025.

Is bitcoin legal in Georgia?

Yes. Georgian law now recognises crypto as a "virtual asset," a category defined by the NBG, according to the law firm Revera. The lari itself cannot be a virtual asset. Revera notes that the NBG restricts transactions using virtual assets except in cases it defines, and that registered providers cannot accept crypto as direct payment for goods or services.

The NBG's role grew in late 2025. Amendments to the Organic Law on the National Bank of Georgia, adopted on December 17, 2025, gave it full supervisory authority over virtual asset service providers (VASPs), the NBG said in March 2026. It then issued rules for stablecoins pegged to the lari or foreign currencies, which must be fully backed by reserve assets. For background, see what is a stablecoin.

Is crypto trading legal in Georgia?

Trading is legal, and the NBG regulates the firms that offer it. A VASP must be a legal entity registered in Georgia, have anti-money laundering policies in place and apply to the NBG, Revera says.

From January 1, 2026, every registered provider must display its NBG registration act at offices, kiosks, websites and apps, Georgia Today reported. The NBG said the change followed repeated cases of unregistered firms misleading consumers. People can check the NBG's public registry before using a service.

On September 8, 2026, the NBG raised the bar again. Minimum supervisory capital is now 150,000 lari for exchange and transfer services, including kiosks, 350,000 lari for trading platforms and 250,000 lari for other services, with new cybersecurity and risk rules. Existing providers have until July 1, 2027 for the risk rules and September 1, 2027 for capital, the NBG said.

Is crypto mining legal in Georgia?

Yes. Mining in Georgia is legal and is treated as taxable activity. The tax advisory firm Andersen says mining income is Georgian-source income, because it uses local electricity and equipment, so individuals pay the standard 20% personal income tax on it. That contrasts with gains from selling crypto, which are generally not taxed for individuals. Our guide to how crypto is taxed in Georgia explains the details.
