Crypto is legal to own in Jamaica as of October 2026, but it operates outside a full local framework. People buy and hold bitcoin mostly through overseas platforms, and the government is moving to license crypto businesses. The Jamaican dollar, including its digital form JAM-DEX, remains the only legal tender.

Is bitcoin legal in Jamaica?

There is no ban on holding or trading bitcoin. What Jamaica lacks is local infrastructure: in its third National Risk Assessment, the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) noted there is no licensed crypto exchange, no domestic trading platform and no registered virtual asset broker, the Gleaner reported. Banks still reported about J$8.9 billion in crypto-related transactions from 2020 to June 2025, which the BOJ put at under 1% of GDP.

What are Jamaica's crypto laws?

The main change is the Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, piloted by Finance Minister Fayval Williams, with debate in the House starting September 22, 2026. As described by the Gleaner, it would:

  • Require any business that exchanges, transfers or holds crypto for Jamaican customers to have an FSC licence, wherever it is based.
  • Make running an unlicensed crypto business a criminal offence.
  • Apply bank-style anti-money laundering duties, including identity checks and the "travel rule" for transfers.

The bill does not make any crypto legal tender, and a licence is not an endorsement. Jamaica chose full licensing rather than a lighter registration model. See crypto anti-money laundering rules for how these duties work globally.

Is bitcoin mining legal in Jamaica?

The bill, as reported, focuses on exchange, transfer and custody services and does not mention mining. We found no official Jamaican statement that bans or licenses mining as of October 2026. For background, see is crypto mining legal.

Does bitcoin work in Jamaica?

Bitcoin works on its own network, so a Jamaican can send and receive it with a wallet. Turning it into Jamaican dollars depends on banks and offshore platforms, which the BOJ calls checkpoints for money entering and leaving crypto.

JAM-DEX is different. It is a central bank digital currency issued only by the BOJ, and amendments to the Bank of Jamaica Act in 2022 made it legal tender and added it to the legal definition of money. It is a digital form of the Jamaican dollar, used through wallets such as National Commercial Bank's Lynk. Bitcoin has no issuer, no legal tender status and a price that moves freely. A September 2026 Gleaner commentary noted that the JAM-DEX rollout has been slow.
