Is crypto legal in Zambia?
Crypto is not banned in Zambia, but it is not legal tender. Since 2026 the Bank of Zambia has required crypto service providers to register with it.
Crypto is not banned in Zambia, but it is not legal tender, as of October 2026. The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) long warned people that they use crypto at their own risk. In 2026 it began requiring crypto businesses to register, a first step toward full rules.
Is bitcoin legal in Zambia?
Bitcoin is not illegal to own, but it has no official status as money. In an October 2018 statement, the BoZ said cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin are not legal tender in Zambia, that it did not supervise or regulate them, and that users would have little legal recourse in cases of theft or fraud. It cited its exclusive right under the Bank of Zambia Act to issue notes and coins.
The BoZ did not announce a ban. Lusaka Times reported at the time that the bank's law gave it no clear power to shut down crypto trading. For how other countries treat the question, see is cryptocurrency legal.
How does Zambia crypto regulation work?
In March 2026 the BoZ told every entity and individual providing virtual asset services to Zambian clients to register with it by March 27, 2026, Zambia Monitor reported. This covers foreign providers too, even without an office in Zambia. Covered services include swapping crypto for kwacha or other money, swapping one crypto for another, transfers, custody, and services linked to issuing or selling tokens. RegAlert's summary of the directive says it also covers stablecoin issuers.
From March 30, 2026, financial institutions regulated by the BoZ may not process transactions to or from unregistered providers. The BoZ stressed that registration is not a license or an approval to operate. A full regulatory framework is to follow after consultation. According to RegAlert, the Securities and Exchange Commission may also be involved where a token counts as a security, and the Financial Intelligence Centre oversees anti-money laundering rules. Zambia's Cyber Security Act 2025, passed in April 2025, does not mention crypto. For background, read crypto anti-money laundering rules.
Is bitcoin mining legal in Zambia?
There is no specific rule on mining in the sources reviewed. The BoZ registration directive lists exchange, transfer and custody services but does not mention mining or staking, so their status is unclear, RegAlert noted. Miners would still be subject to general laws such as those on electricity use, business registration and tax. For the global picture, see is crypto mining legal.
Zambia is moving from a hands-off warning to formal oversight, so details may change once the full framework is published. Comparing it with neighbours in crypto regulation around the world can help.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the regulator or a qualified professional for your own situation.
