Can you buy crypto with Chime?
You cannot buy crypto inside Chime, which offers none, but a Chime debit card or checking account can fund purchases on apps and exchanges that accept them.
You cannot buy crypto with Chime directly, because Chime says it does not offer cryptocurrency or stablecoins at this time. What you can do is use a Chime debit card or Chime checking account to pay for crypto on another platform, if that platform and the card network allow it. The general steps are in how to buy bitcoin with a debit card.
Does Chime offer crypto?
No. Chime's help centre says there is nothing crypto related to sign up for or use, and that any future feature would be announced through official channels. It notes that Chime's automated investing accounts, run through Atomic Invest, may hold shares in public companies tied to crypto, such as Coinbase. Those are ordinary stock holdings, not coins.
How do you buy bitcoin with a Chime account?
The usual route is through an app that sells bitcoin. Chime says its accounts work with Cash App, PayPal and Venmo, linked by the Chime Visa Debit Card or by routing and account numbers found under Profile, then Account details. Each of those apps offers bitcoin, as covered in how to buy bitcoin on Cash App, PayPal or Venmo. Chime says fees on those apps are set by the apps, and its SpotMe overdraft feature does not cover these transfers.
Chime also says it does not support Zelle. Its own Pay Anyone feature is offered for sending money to people who do not use Chime.
Can you use a Chime debit card on Coinbase?
Coinbase lists debit cards as an instant way for US customers to buy crypto and to cash out, though not to sell. Chime's debit card runs on Visa and is issued by The Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank, so it is the kind of card Coinbase accepts in principle.
Several Coinbase rules still apply:
- Card type. Coinbase does not accept prepaid, reloadable, secured or business cards. The Chime Card, and the older Credit Builder card, are secured Visa credit cards, so they fall outside what Coinbase takes.
- Name match. The name on the card must match the Coinbase account, or a manual review takes one to three business days.
- Processor blocks. Coinbase says some card processors block crypto transactions, and only the card provider can change that.
- Bank links. Coinbase links banks instantly through Plaid or Stripe and says online banks cannot be verified manually.
Why was my Chime card declined for crypto?
Chime's list of decline reasons includes a card that is not activated, transactions turned off in the app, too little money, a spending limit reached, a billing address that does not match, a merchant you asked Chime to block, and fraud prevention flagging the payment. Its help page does not single out crypto platforms, so Chime support can say which reason applied. Declines on the platform side are covered in can you buy crypto with a credit card.
