Crypto is legal in Norway as of October 2026. People can buy, hold and trade crypto, and Norway, though outside the EU, has brought the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) into national law. Mining is also legal today, but it is under political pressure, and the government has said it wants to limit new mining centres as much as possible.

Is bitcoin legal in Norway?

Yes. Norway's Crypto-Assets Act (kryptoeiendelsloven), which implements MiCA, entered into force on July 1, 2025, Finanstilsynet announced. Since then, crypto-asset services covered by the law need permission from Finanstilsynet, the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway, before they can be offered in Norway. For the EU background, see what is MiCA.

Owning bitcoin is not restricted, and gains are taxed. Holdings also count toward wealth tax, as covered in our guide to how crypto is taxed in Norway.

Is crypto mining legal in Norway?

Yes, for now. In June 2025 the Labour government said it would explore a temporary ban on establishing new data centres that mine crypto with the most power-intensive methods, Decrypt reported, with Energy Minister Terje Aasland arguing it would free up land, power and grid capacity.

In a December 16, 2025 letter to Parliament, the minister responsible said the government agreed that new crypto data centres must be limited. It was examining a temporary national planning provision under the Planning and Building Act to stop new power-intensive crypto data centres, with a draft targeted for early 2026. On March 12, 2026, Parliament adopted a resolution asking the government to return with a formal legislative proposal for a ban on new mining data centres, the law firm Schjødt reported. Schjødt said no ban was in force at that point. The proposals concern new data centres.

How can I buy bitcoin in Norway?

Through a provider allowed to offer crypto services in Norway under MiCA. Norway had a 12-month transitional period for existing firms, which ended on July 1, 2026. Finanstilsynet relayed the EU securities regulator's position that firms without a licence by then must wind down, Schjødt reported.

Finanstilsynet confirmed AK Jensen Norway AS as the first Norwegian CASP in February 2026, for order handling and portfolio management. In June 2026, Schjødt named TÝR Markets, Firi and K33 Markets as licensed Norwegian entities. Checking whether a provider holds permission is a basic step before opening an account.
