Yes, crypto is legal in Cyprus. People can buy, hold, sell and mine crypto, and companies that offer crypto services are supervised by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). As of October 2026, all crypto services in Cyprus must comply with the EU's MiCA regulation.

Is bitcoin legal in Cyprus?

Yes. Cypriot rules focus on the firms that provide crypto services rather than on owning coins. Since January 1, 2026, gains from disposing of crypto have been taxed under a dedicated 8% rule. Details are in how crypto is taxed in Cyprus.

CySEC reminded investors on July 10, 2026 that all crypto services must now meet MiCA's requirements. It told clients to check the ESMA register to see whether their provider is authorised. If it is not, clients should act promptly and move their crypto to an authorised provider or a self-hosted wallet, because unauthorised firms do not offer MiCA safeguards such as protections for client assets.

What are Cyprus crypto laws?

Before MiCA, crypto firms in Cyprus registered with CySEC under national law. CySEC stopped accepting new national applications on October 17, 2024, and stopped taking notifications from firms elsewhere in the European Economic Area on October 30, 2024, Cointelegraph reported. From December 30, 2024, MiCA replaced national crypto licensing across the EU.

ESMA's list shows Cyprus chose the maximum 18-month transition. Firms already registered could keep operating until July 1, 2026, or until their MiCA application was decided if that came first. CySEC set February 27, 2026 as the final date to apply, and said firms that did not apply had to submit a wind-down plan, Cyprus Mail reported. Firms still on the national register also had to follow the EU's transfer of funds rules for crypto.

After the deadline, national and European authorities said they would monitor whether significant unauthorised cross-border providers wind down without delay, and could take coordinated action against them. For a wider comparison, see crypto regulation around the world.

Is crypto mining legal in Cyprus?

Yes. Cyprus's 2026 tax reform deals with mining directly. According to Rightax, the law says crypto acquired through mining does not get the special 8% rate. Instead, mining is taxed under ordinary income tax rules. Companies treat it as a business activity taxed at the 15% corporate rate, and individuals who mine systematically for profit are taxed at progressive personal rates. Occasional small-scale mining depends on the facts. See is crypto mining legal for other countries.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the regulator or a qualified professional for your own situation.
