Yes, crypto is legal in the Czech Republic, also called Czechia. People can buy, hold and sell bitcoin, and firms that provide crypto services must be authorised. As of October 2026, the Czech National Bank (CNB) is the authority that grants those authorisations under the EU's MiCA regulation.

Is bitcoin legal in the Czech Republic?

Yes, but it is not money in the legal sense. When the CNB bought a small amount of bitcoin in 2025, Governor Aleš Michl stressed that the koruna is the country's legal tender, The Block reported. He also warned that the value of bitcoin can swing sharply. Holding bitcoin is legal for individuals, and the rules focus on the businesses that serve them.

What are the Czech crypto laws?

The key national law is the Financial Market Digitalisation Act, Act No. 31/2025 Coll., which took effect on February 15, 2025. It made the CNB the competent authority for MiCA, and on the same date ended the old national regime, under which crypto services were an unqualified trade, the CNB says.

Grant Thornton explains the transition. Firms that operated under a trade licence before December 30, 2024 had to apply for MiCA authorisation by July 31, 2025. They could keep operating until their application was decided, but no later than July 1, 2026. ESMA's list confirms Czechia chose the full 18-month period.

The CNB received 248 applications, one of the highest counts in the EU, mostly in the last days before the deadline. It issued its first six authorisations on February 11, 2026. The CNB notes that an authorisation does not mean it considers any crypto investment safe. Individuals can no longer provide MiCA-covered services as sole traders, since applicants must be legal entities.

Does the Czech Republic use bitcoin?

Not as a currency, but its central bank has tested it. The CNB board approved a USD 1 million test portfolio on October 30, 2025, made up of bitcoin, a dollar stablecoin and a tokenised deposit, according to The Block. Its purpose is to test storage, settlement, accounting and anti-money laundering processes. The portfolio sits outside the CNB's international reserves and will not be actively increased. Earlier in 2025, Michl had floated putting up to 5% of reserves into bitcoin, but the board deferred any such decision.
