Can you buy crypto with a prepaid card or gift card?

Rarely on big exchanges. Coinbase rejects prepaid cards, and gift cards for crypto mostly trade on peer-to-peer sites where gift card crypto scams are common.

You can sometimes buy crypto with a prepaid card or a Visa gift card, but most large exchanges do not accept them. Platforms usually want a debit card or bank account tied to a verified identity, and prepaid and gift cards often carry no name at all. Where these cards are accepted, success depends on the issuer, the platform and the card network.

Can you buy crypto with a prepaid debit card?

Not on Coinbase. Its troubleshooting page says it does not support transactions from prepaid, reloadable, secured or business cards, and that a card must support 3D Secure, an extra verification step at checkout. Its list of US payment methods covers bank transfers, debit cards, wire transfers, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, as of October 2026.

Kraken says a card must be a valid Visa or Mastercard in the same legal name as the Kraken account, and US clients can use only debit cards. A gift card that carries no name has trouble passing that check.

Can you buy crypto with a Visa gift card?

Some services say yes. BitPay, a crypto payments company, wrote in 2023 that some of its partners accept Visa or Mastercard prepaid and gift cards, while American Express and Discover cards are rarely supported. It also noted that card issuers set their own rules on crypto and may decline the charge regardless of the platform. Card purchases also carry their own fees, explained in what are crypto fees, and the parallel issues with credit cards are covered in can you buy crypto with a credit card.

Coinbase's own gift cards are a different product. The company says it no longer sells them but still honors existing balances, which can only be redeemed by US residents in a Coinbase account. Gift cards designed to be redeemed for crypto are explained in how do crypto gift cards work.

How do people buy bitcoin with store gift cards?

Store cards, such as those for app stores or retailers, are not accepted by mainstream exchanges. They are traded on peer-to-peer markets, where one user hands over a card code and another sends bitcoin. That route has a poor record. In 2019 the peer-to-peer platform Paxful said gift card fraud was ten times higher than on other payment methods, Decrypt reported, because card payments cannot be reversed and balances are hard to check.

How do gift card crypto scams work?

Gift cards and crypto are both favored by scammers because the money is hard to trace and cannot be pulled back. The FTC says no real business or government agency will ask you to pay with a gift card, and that only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency. Common stories include fake government agents, tech support, prize fees and romance scams, often with orders to buy cards at specific stores and read out the PIN.

If you gave a scammer gift card numbers, the FTC says to contact the card company right away, keep the card and receipt, and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. More patterns appear in common crypto scams.
