Why is my crypto on hold on Coinbase?
A Coinbase hold usually means a recent bank deposit has not fully reached Coinbase yet, so crypto bought with it can be traded but not sent or withdrawn.
Crypto is usually on hold on Coinbase because it was bought with money from a recent bank deposit that Coinbase has not yet collected from the bank. Coinbase lets the money be used to trade straight away, but blocks sending the crypto off the platform or withdrawing the cash until the bank payment clears. The details below reflect Coinbase's US help pages as of October 2026.
Why is my crypto unavailable to transfer on Coinbase?
When cash is deposited from a bank, Coinbase makes it available to buy, sell and trade at once. Behind the scenes it still has to collect the money. Coinbase says it requests the funds from the bank within three to five days of the deposit, and the hold is lifted once the bank processes the request and the money arrives.
During that time, the held amount cannot be withdrawn. Crypto bought with held cash can be sold or traded on Coinbase, but it cannot be sent to an external wallet. Held cash also cannot be used for DEX trading or prediction market contracts. Crypto or stocks already owned before the deposit are not affected.
A different kind of delay happens after a send has started. A transfer marked Pending is waiting for confirmation on the blockchain, not for a Coinbase hold. Common causes include network delays and low fees. Normal transfer times are covered in how long does a crypto transfer take.
How long is the Coinbase hold time?
Coinbase does not publish a single fixed period. It says the length depends on factors such as account history, payment activity and transaction history. Separately, it says bank transfers by ACH or wire typically take one to three business days to settle, and banks running their own checks can add delays.
The exact date is shown in two ways:
- Email. A confirmation email gives the date the funds become available, and a second email follows when they are. Holds usually end by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on that date.
- Balance screen. On the web, under Cash, then US Dollar, then See Balance Summary. Starting a send also shows the available amount.
Can you remove a Coinbase temporary hold?
No. Coinbase says its support team cannot shorten a hold, citing banking rules and fraud prevention. Holds can also be extended if a payment is disputed or to protect the account.
The way money goes in affects what is held. Coinbase says deposits made with a debit card let users send crypto right away, though existing holds still apply. That is one reason the payment method chosen at the start matters, as covered in how to buy cryptocurrency.
What if sends are still restricted after the hold ends?
Coinbase says sends or withdrawals may stay temporarily restricted even after a hold clears. Its suggested options are to wait and try again, or to withdraw to the same bank account the money came from. If that account is closed, Coinbase support is the next step. Cashing out to a bank is explained in how to withdraw money from Coinbase.
