Can you buy crypto on Schwab or Fidelity?
Yes, as of October 2026 Fidelity offers crypto trading and a crypto IRA, and Schwab is rolling out spot bitcoin and ether trading to eligible clients.
Yes, you can buy crypto directly on both Schwab and Fidelity as of October 2026, but the details differ. Fidelity currently supports more coins, outside transfers and a crypto IRA. Schwab started a phased launch in May 2026, so not every client can open a Schwab Crypto account yet. Both also offer indirect exposure through funds such as a bitcoin ETF.
When did Schwab crypto trading launch?
Schwab Crypto went live for a first wave of eligible retail clients in mid-May 2026, according to The Block. It lets clients trade bitcoin and ether in a separate crypto account offered by Charles Schwab Premier Bank, with Paxos handling trade execution and sub-custody. In an August 27, 2026 release, Schwab said it plans to add Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink "in the coming months." Its crypto page still invites clients to sign up for early access, and Schwab says not all clients will qualify.
The account is available in every US state except New York and Louisiana. Schwab does not accept crypto deposits from outside wallets. Before the launch, Schwab clients could only reach crypto through ETPs, crypto futures and crypto-related stocks, which remain available.
How much does Schwab charge for crypto trades?
Schwab's pricing is 0.75% of the dollar value of each trade, and its crypto page says minimum fees may apply. Schwab notes these crypto holdings are not FDIC insured and not SIPC protected. Our guide on whether crypto is insured explains why that matters.
How does a Fidelity crypto account work?
A Fidelity Crypto account is run by Fidelity Digital Assets, a national trust bank that handles custody and trading. As of October 2026 it supports bitcoin, ether, litecoin and solana, plus the Fidelity Digital Dollar stablecoin. You can transfer crypto in and out, which Schwab does not yet allow. You must be a US citizen over 18 living in a state Fidelity Digital Assets serves.
Fidelity charges a 1% fee on buys and sells. Since December 4, 2025, the fee is shown separately instead of being built into the price as a spread. Fees are explained more broadly in what are crypto fees.
What is a Fidelity crypto IRA?
The Fidelity Crypto IRA holds bitcoin, ether, litecoin and solana inside a traditional, Roth or rollover IRA. It links to a Fidelity brokerage IRA, which is where contributions and withdrawals happen in dollars. Crypto cannot be transferred into it, and it is not offered in California or Oregon. There are no fees to open or hold it, but trades carry the same 1% fee. For the wider rules, see can you hold crypto in an IRA or 401(k).
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
