Whether Coinbase is safe depends on which risk you mean: theft, company failure, data exposure or regulatory trouble. Coinbase is a regulated US exchange that holds customers' crypto in custody, so the answer rests on how it stores assets, what protections exist and its record, set out here as of October 2026.

Is Coinbase safe to hold crypto?

Coinbase's 2025 annual report to the SEC says it is licensed as a money transmitter where states require it, holds a BitLicense from New York's financial regulator, and runs a New York chartered trust company for custody. It says it generally keeps no more than 2% of custodied assets in internet-connected hot wallets, with the rest offline.

The same filing says customer crypto held in the US is treated under commercial law as not belonging to Coinbase or its general creditors. That protection has not been tested in a crypto exchange bankruptcy, a question covered in what happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt. Coinbase can also restrict an account, as explained in can crypto be frozen.

Its record is not spotless. In January 2023, New York's financial regulator announced a $100 million settlement over weak customer checks and more than 100,000 unreviewed transaction alerts.

Is Coinbase FDIC insured?

Only for cash. Coinbase says US dollar balances sit in custodial accounts at FDIC-insured banks and can qualify for pass-through cover up to $250,000 per depositor if a holding bank fails. Crypto is not FDIC or SIPC insured. Coinbase holds a crime policy covering a portion of crypto in its storage systems against theft, but it says the policy does not cover losses from unauthorized access to a customer's own account. The wider picture is in is crypto insured.

What happens if Coinbase gets hacked?

The best-known incident was a data theft, not a theft of coins. Coinbase disclosed in May 2025 that overseas support contractors had been paid to copy customer data, The Register reported. Names, addresses, phone numbers, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, masked bank account numbers, ID images and balances were exposed for some users, but not passwords or private keys. A filing reported by The Block put the count at 69,461 customers, with the theft beginning in December 2024.

Criminals then used the data to pose as Coinbase and trick customers into sending funds. Coinbase refused a $20 million ransom, pledged to reimburse those customers and estimated the cost at $180 million to $400 million.

Is Coinbase safe to give your SSN or link a bank account?

Coinbase says financial regulations require it to collect personal information, and US sign-up asks for the last four digits of a Social Security number plus details matching a photo ID. US brokers also report customers' digital asset sales to the IRS on Form 1099-DA starting with 2025. Linking a bank account lets Coinbase move dollars by ACH, and the 2025 breach shows such data can leak even when funds are untouched. Security keys and withdrawal allowlists, covered in how to secure a crypto exchange account, address the account takeover risk that insurance excludes.
