Why is my Coinbase account restricted?

A Coinbase account is usually restricted over a security flag, unfinished identity checks, a failed send or a location rule, and the app shows what to fix.

A Coinbase account is restricted when Coinbase limits what it can do, usually because of a security concern, unfinished identity checks, a failed send or a rule tied to where you live. The fix depends on which of these applies, and Coinbase lists the required steps in app and web notifications. This guide reflects Coinbase's US help pages as of October 2026. Freezes in general are covered in can crypto be frozen.

Why is my Coinbase account restricted?

Coinbase's help pages name several triggers:

  • Security. Suspected malicious activity or a problem during account recovery. A message saying the account is temporarily disabled usually points to a potential security issue.
  • Verification. Unfinished identity checks, or a request to confirm your personal information that has not been answered. Coinbase says regulations require it to keep customer details accurate.
  • Failed sends. Failed send attempts or scam-related risk signals.
  • Location or balance. Limits based on local rules, a negative balance, or payment method details that do not match the account name.
  • Your request. You can lock the account yourself, and Coinbase can lock it if it detects suspicious activity.

Holds on newly deposited money are a separate issue, explained in why is my crypto on hold on Coinbase.

Why is my Coinbase account restricted from sending crypto?

Coinbase says it may stop sends to protect customers from losses on transactions that cannot be reversed. Once crypto leaves the platform, Coinbase says it cannot recover it.

While sends are blocked, Coinbase says customers can still convert crypto to cash and withdraw it to a verified bank account, though security and risk factors can affect this. That is the situation often described as restricted to withdrawals only. Transfers to another brokerage may also be delayed.

Is a Coinbase account lock the same as a restriction?

Not exactly. A Security Lock, whether you turn it on or Coinbase does, lets you sign in, view balances and contact support, but not trade, move crypto or change settings. Unlocking takes 2-step verification. If the lock was set from another device or by Coinbase, you also verify your identity. After unlocking, you reset your password and crypto sends pause for 24 hours.

How do you fix a Coinbase account restriction?

Coinbase's suggested order is:

  1. Read the in-app or web notification, which lists any required steps.
  2. Finish identity verification or confirm your information. Your name must match the legal name on your ID.
  3. Review Coinbase's security recommendations, sign in and try the action again.
  4. Wait for an email. Reviews typically take up to 10 business days, sometimes longer.

You need access to your 2-step verification method throughout. Coinbase tells restricted customers never to share passwords or verification codes, and to distrust unsolicited offers to move assets to outside wallets. Fake support accounts often target people in this position, as how to secure a crypto exchange account explains.
