Why do crypto exchanges have withdrawal limits?

Crypto exchanges set withdrawal limits based on identity checks, account history and payment method, to cut fraud and meet anti-money laundering rules.

A crypto withdrawal limit is the most cash or crypto an exchange lets you move out of your account in a given period. Exchanges use limits to manage fraud risk from reversible payments and to match how much they know about you under identity and anti-money laundering checks. Your own limit is not fixed and usually changes as your account history grows.

Why do crypto withdrawal limits exist?

Exchanges tie limits to how much they have verified about you. Kraken says your limits depend on verification status, country of residence, transaction activity, account age and the asset involved. Coinbase describes an automated system that weighs account age, location, transaction history, payment method and which identity checks you have finished. The identity side is explained in what is KYC.

Payment risk is the other reason. Bank transfers and card payments can be reversed after the fact, while crypto that has left the exchange is very hard to pull back, as explained in can you reverse a crypto transaction. Kraken may hold withdrawals for 72 hours after ACH, PayPal, card or digital wallet purchases, and for up to 7 days after some ACH deposits.

How do you increase your limits on Kraken?

Kraken has three verification paths. A standard verified individual account covers most people. A higher-limits personal tier raises cash deposit and withdrawal limits for larger users, and a business account serves companies. Moving up generally needs a government ID and proof of address, and sometimes extra documents. You can see your current limits under the Limits tab in Account Settings. Kraken also says limits usually rise the more you use the platform. As of October 2026, crypto withdrawal limits on Kraken are set dynamically rather than at a fixed figure.

How do you increase your withdrawal limit on Coinbase?

On the web, open Settings, then Account limits, and choose Apply for increase. In the app, go to Profile & Settings, then Limits and features. Coinbase reviews eligibility, which can take up to two days, and may ask you to complete account, personal, payment method or identity checks. If you are already at the top level, the option will not appear. Account holds are covered in why is my crypto on hold on Coinbase.

Why is my crypto withdrawal pending?

Pending often just means the transfer is still moving through normal steps. On Kraken, a withdrawal goes from Initiated to Pending to Sending to Success, and the first two stages each normally take up to 10 minutes. An On hold status means staff must review it manually.

Coinbase lists several blockchain reasons for a send to stay pending: waiting for network confirmations, heavy network traffic, a fee too low for quick inclusion, or trying to spend funds that have not confirmed yet. Kraken also holds withdrawals to new addresses for up to 24 hours after a password change. Typical timing by network is in how long does a crypto transfer take.
