How do you buy AVAX?
To buy AVAX you use a platform that lists Avalanche's coin, such as Coinbase or Robinhood, or MetaMask's buy feature, and move it on the Avalanche C-Chain.
To buy AVAX, you open a verified account on a platform that lists Avalanche's coin, add money and place an order, or buy it inside a self-custody wallet through a payment partner. Avalanche runs more than one chain, so the network you pick when moving AVAX matters. What the network does is covered in what Avalanche is.
How do you buy AVAX coin on an exchange?
Coinbase's guide for US buyers gives these steps:
- Sign up and verify your account with a valid ID, and possibly proof of address.
- Add a bank account, debit card or wire transfer. Credit cards cannot be used for AVAX.
- Open Buy & Sell, tap Buy and search for Avalanche.
- Enter an amount, starting from about $1.
- Select Review order and tap Buy now.
US customers can also pay with PayPal. Coinbase says the fee depends on location, payment method, order size and market conditions, and shows it on the preview screen. Robinhood's availability page also lists AVAX as tradable, with no state restriction shown. See how to buy cryptocurrency for the general process.
How do you buy AVAX on MetaMask?
MetaMask does not sell AVAX itself. Its buy feature passes the purchase to outside providers. For US users these include Banxa, Coinbase Pay, MoonPay, PayPal, Ramp, Robinhood, Stripe, Topper and Transak, among others, and MetaMask says the providers and payment methods shown depend on your region. Avalanche C-Chain is on its list of networks supported for buying.
If Avalanche is not already showing, MetaMask's help page says you can add it from the network selector under Additional networks. MetaMask also tells users to check network details before adding one through outside lists. The provider shows its fee at checkout, and what MetaMask is covers the wallet itself.
Which network should you use for AVAX crypto?
Avalanche's main network has three chains. The C-Chain runs smart contracts, and it is the Avalanche network MetaMask's buy feature lists. Avalanche's support team says to always send from like chain to like chain, such as C-Chain to C-Chain or X-Chain to X-Chain. It also notes that not every exchange supports C-Chain withdrawals, so check before you start.
If AVAX is withdrawn on the wrong network, Avalanche's help center describes adding that network to the wallet, then sending the funds back to the exchange and withdrawing again on the C-Chain. That return trip needs the other network's gas token to pay fees. A small test transfer first lowers the cost of a mistake, as what happens if you send crypto to the wrong address explains.
How do you get AVAX for fees?
Using apps on Avalanche needs AVAX for transaction fees, even when you are moving other tokens. The usual ways to get some are to buy on an exchange and withdraw on the C-Chain, to buy through a wallet's buy feature, or to swap another token you already hold on the C-Chain for AVAX. Check that a swap delivers native AVAX, not a lookalike token.
Crypto prices are volatile, and platform listings and fees change often.
