Is Binance safe?

Is Binance safe depends on the risk, since it runs a $1 billion SAFU fund and proof of reserves but pleaded guilty to US money laundering charges in 2023.

Is Binance safe is really several questions: how well it guards against hackers, whether it holds the coins it owes, and how it stands with regulators. Binance has strong safeguards on paper, including an emergency fund and published reserve reports, but also a serious criminal record in the United States. This guide sets out the facts without judging whether the platform suits anyone.

Is Binance safe from hackers?

Binance has been hacked once on a large scale. On May 7, 2019, attackers used phishing, malware and stolen API keys and two-factor codes to withdraw 7,000 bitcoin, then worth about $40 million, from its hot wallet. Cold storage was not reached. Binance paused deposits and withdrawals for a security review and covered the loss from its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU.

SAFU was created in 2018 as a reserve to repay users after extreme events such as hacks. In January 2026 Binance said it would hold the $1 billion fund in bitcoin and top it back up to $1 billion if its value fell below $800 million, Cointelegraph reported. SAFU does not cover losses when a user's own login is stolen, so the steps in how to secure a crypto exchange account still matter.

Is Binance safe to keep money on?

Binance publishes regular proof of reserves reports. Its system uses a Merkle tree so users can check their balance was counted, and since February 2023 it has added zk-SNARKs to prove backing without revealing individual balances. By November 2023 it covered 31 assets. Proof of reserves is a snapshot of assets and usually does not show debts. Any exchange balance is also a custodial claim, as explained in custodial vs non-custodial wallets.

Is Binance safe and legit with regulators?

Binance is a real, operating business, but it has a criminal conviction. On November 21, 2023, Binance pleaded guilty to Bank Secrecy Act violations, failing to register as a money transmitting business and breaking sanctions law. It agreed to pay about $4.3 billion and keep an independent compliance monitor for three years. Founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty, resigned as CEO and served four months in prison. President Trump pardoned him in October 2025, Reuters reported.

In October 2026 the head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division told Bloomberg the department was reviewing whether Binance was meeting that settlement. He gave no specifics and did not say Binance had broken it.

Is Binance safe in the US, and is it safe to give an SSN?

The global Binance.com exchange does not serve US residents. People in the US are directed to Binance.US, a separate company described in Binance vs Binance.US. Binance.US asks for the last four digits of a Social Security number, a legal name and a home address for basic verification, and an ID document and selfie for advanced verification. It says the SSN is required by federal law. Binance.US also says the personal data it collects is stored securely, though no company can promise its data will never be exposed.
